Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

It's really hard to explain but easy to do. The cable isn't pulled but the housing is pushed tongue
The cable goes through the guts and is held by the two "fingers" inside the body by the lead ball on the end.. The cable housing goes into the black plastic "cup" on the other side of the "fingers". If I get time I will right up a tutorial and take pics this weekend.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Boy, I was just about to post the same question as PWgoose. Coasty, I am anxiously awaiting your tutorial. I tried it like you are saying, but it seems like it's all bass ackwards. I seems like the only wat to make this work is to have the cable coming out the inside where your fingers would be holding the grips, (see pic).

But I know this can't be right.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

hahah....yes thats backwards.    the cable goes in the other side of the handle.   the lever will push the sleeve away....most handles pull the cable....

the opposite of how you tried above.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Remove cable from housing.string cable through lever from under lever part. Now string housing on to cable.Bonus info:you can bend open the clamp to wrap around the bars instead of taking the grips off to install.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

I think that I will wait and hope, for Coasty's tutorial with pics.

JJS340, I grew up in Austintown....see you are in Poland, Ohio.
I now live in Portland, Oregon.   My parents bought my '81 Mongoose at Frankford
Bicycle in Girard....it's still there.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Patrick,
Yeah, Frankford is still there in Girard. I was just in there to get a bottom bracket set last week, nice guy.  Howabout the Schwinn shop on Market St. in Boardman, remember them? They were a big BMX dealer too, (although not as big as Frankford).

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Duh, I see how the cable attaches now.   Khool.

Yeah, I think that remeber where the Schwinn shop on Market was.   North of 224.
I bought a Raleigh mountain bike at a shop up that way on the west side of the street
in about 1991, but not sure the name of the shop.   There was also a Schwinn Shop next to the
Austintown Plaza near Austintown Middle School....where I went.   We used to hang in that area.  One of my buddies bought a Predator in about '83 from them.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

oh.. looks like powder to me but i guess its paint.
thats pretty cool if the paint flexes like that.
did not think about them going over painted bars.
i installed a set of dx brakes on my cruiser but its got chrome bars.

They're anodized, not painted.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

So, know that I know how to install the cable, can someone tell me which cable end I need?  I have seen a couple of different "ends" at the brake lever.  Question # 2.....can I get the proper Dia Compe cable that attaches to my MX 1000?????....it has the Weinman adjuster on it.  The housing on my old worn out Dia Compe cable has a threaded end that is crimped on.
Thanks, Patrick

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

it should be the end with the large cylinder.
pics clear up any confusion smile

PWMGoose wrote:

then we must be talking about different DX brake systems then.
this must be what ya'll are talking about...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o261/sumo178/IMG_7828.jpg
ive always called these shimano tourney brakes.

this is the DX brake i was talking about -
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3172/3055797322_7cec22540b.jpg
its painted and i would not pry the handle clamp up on this kind.

sorry if i got things mixed up.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Sorry, maybe I did not explain.  I have seen two different kinds of cables....two different cable ends.   One is more of a ball and one is more of a stepped hat.
Which one fits the DX lever?   Also, where do I get a new cable housing to attach to the MX1000 caliper?  The gold one shown above is not an MX1000.

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

the cable end that looks like this -

-------0

http://media.rei.com/media/915820.jpg
shown at the top of this image

goes into the hole on the trigger
http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu287/dpercival1971/85%20Haro%20Master%20Build/IMG_1026.jpg

the cable then threads into the slot on the trigger and then out the hole on the handle.

at the brake caliper the other end of the cable will attach like so -
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/CORVETTEJIM1968/DG%20stuff/Dia-compebrakes.jpg
mx1000 or odyssey.. it dont matter. all side pull brakes hook up almost exactly the same.

the cable end that looks like this -

-------D
you cut off. (i think that end is originally for shifters)
http://media.rei.com/media/915820.jpg
(shown at bottom in this image)
and the cut end goes to the caliper and thread through the brake
(as the pic of the blue brake shows)

does this help?

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

Ok, so I am still wondering where I can get a new cable housing with the crimped on threaded part that works with the Weinmann adjuster ?

Re: Shimano DX Lever intstallation......cables?????

That is not part of a cable housing, but part of the Weinmann adjuster.

It will come out if you are careful. If not the adjuster will break and you will have to find another one!! Great advise Draw.
