Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

Innovative frame design - unbelievable claims in ad - I used to dream about how this bike might feel going down the first straight-away.  Let us know how it rides and give us more background if you can.?.?  How did you get two of the 4 that still exist?  Very cool.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

As I mentioned this was built up for the 2009 Rockford Vintage Show so I had not riden it yet.  Since we got back I have left the bike at my dad's house so I have still not ridden it.

I have been riding my Slingshot 24" cruiser around the block with my 6 year old daughter and her titan mini along with my 4 year old son on his dept. store schwinn!  The bike is great, it is super smooth but has a funky side to side flex to it!

I have heard concers about them being unsafe as a cable could brake; I'm not buying that argument.  The cables are aircraft cables rated at over 1900 # breaking strength.  I just do not see that amount of pressure on these bikes, the fiberglass center would be the first to go!

I hope to take it to our local track this Thursday if I can find time; nice we have a track again.

Thanks for all the Positive comments, I have been lamenting this build for years and it is almost how I had imagined.  a few tweaks yet to come?

I loved to see it considered a Clean Build as it is my first.

About the bikes.  As I mentioned I have had it for nearly 20 years.  I bought it from a kid in High School after I quit racing.  I had always wanted one and found it in his garage.  He took $50 for it and I held onto it all these years.  It was not until I discovered VBMX that I got the itch to really build it, then upon investigating the bikes I learned that it was somewhat unique!

Unbelievably, my dad found his less than three months ago as a heap of rusted metal.  I am sure he will be posting his soon - it is black with killer Son lites on it!  He did have to put some work into it, but was able to do very well with his score.  I will leave it to him to tell his story!

Thanks again

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

I picked up an 85 slingshot about 6 months ago.Love the unique design.Yours turned out really nice ,was'nt aware the early one's used square tubing.Nice to know.I've always wondered how they would feel on a track.I'll have to build mine up so I can see for my self.I think the cables and the flex plate are plenty strong. The cables are supposed to be tested at 2000 lbs breaking strength and the flex plate is like 3" long and about 3/4" thick.Thats a pretty thick and short flex plate that really doesnt flex that much.Maybe an an inch at the head tube if your lucky.Nice bike and cool story. You have a 20" and 24" slingshot frame now thats cool.I would love to find a slingshot cruiser.

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

We have a few slinghsots in our collection; including a very unique mini.  To the best of our knowledge their were only two of those ever built.

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

We used to distribute these in the UK BITD, I was under the impression the flex block was made from Kelvlar, memory is fading, so could be wrong...wink

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

Several items used.  I have even heard they used downhill skiis originally.  One thing with Slingshot is that they were not affraid to try new items the team riders brought to them.  I have been fortunate to live in the town they were made in and have a bunch of "experts" (read: Team riders / shop workers / bike dealers / Original owner etc) to call upon for info.

I raced a couple weeks ago on my 24"  first race in 24 years.  FYI, if you try it, make sure your chain ring bolts are tight!  I ended up falling out of the gate.  I was putting so much torque on it at the gate, that my chain popped off and i came in DFL first race back!

Re: 1983 Sling Shot Pro

Just out of curiosity, what would one of the original square tube frames go for if you tried to buy one? Or what have they sold for?

PS.

I have VERY GOOD REPO Stickers for Slingshots! as well as newly manufactured mid section (fiberglass) that I can sell. I need one, so we had a few made.

Do you have the 1983 version?

So sweet, I love it. The cranks are very nice and the forks are killer.

PS,  Those cranks are gen2 bullseye cranks.

Don't know much about these Babes but I do remember them BITD and wondered how they performed on the track. Nice to see again and it sure brought back memories particularly from the Ad posted about Slingshot. wink
