1973 Schwinn Stingray

a custom schwinn stingray turned race bike

i trade my friend a 99 gt performer f/f for this bike. he found on the side of a trail, all rusted. someone turned it into a lowrider, they painted it blue with a sparkle clear coat. when i received it i tore off everything and then repainted it.

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

Awesome brake hanger / bridge 'construct'!  My first BMX was my old yellow sting-ray from like '72.  I couldn't get my folks to buy me the real deal, so i put knobbies on the old S steel rims , threw on a plastic molded BMX saddle, a set of BMX handlebars and grips.
Even though it was heavy as sin, I rode the shit out of that beater for years. Learned how to wheelie and bunny hop on it.  First kiss ride, first 'over the bars' header crash, first job bike.  The coaster brake never gave out, but in later years it howled like a banshee.

The original MNT bike hill was named 'Mt. Repack' lovingly, for every downhill they did on their old 26' cruiser schwinns (sissy frames) set up with saddle, front hand brakes; they had to regrease the rear brake/hub afterwards.  They used those schwinn curved/sissy frames in this fashion for years.  COOL BEANS AND RAD REUSE OF THE COOLEST BIKE EVER!!!

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

I've seen two pieces of steel cinched on the bridge before, but that looks so much nicer,

And like a whole lot of fun.

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

Amazing Job on the rebuild , nice to know it performs well on the track .
That's a really good idea for the rear brake set-up , I've come across
that problem many times with old cruiser bicycles , etc ....
I'm gonna try that next time ... good one ! Thanks !

Also do the same with old school chevys and classic cars/trucks

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

SWEEEET!!! I like bikes set up to be ridable. Mine are survivor bikes, setup ridable for the type of riding I did at the time than retired. I just could not part with them. I have a bud that builds up old school road bikes. He also rides em. Maybe that will become my new hobbie, to build to suit me and enjoy. Of course mine will be 80s era BMX. I dig the brake setup!

Re: 1973 Schwinn Stingray

Very cool Freedo! I love the fact that as a "younger" guy you have such a serious appreciation for the 70's stuff that us "older" guys are so connected to.

Moreover, the fact that you clean these bikes up and go out and ride them, puts you in the highest category of cool in my book!

Keep up the good work! :)

DAMN...
that lowrider sure went to hell!
gonna sound dumb but is that bike the same one as the present black one you have? 'yes'
anyways if not you could just fix it up straighten out the seat bars and fork and call it a rat rod..
or maybe it would be a lowrider..

RAT-RIDER

Home made, made from the piece that holds the adjuster screw on the brakes, you screw the center bolt into it, and then the mounting piece to the fender hole

I could not agree more.  I like how you set up the brake, and how it was done to be used - not just to look pretty.  Very nice save, and I really like the "before", "after", and "riding" shots.  Very cool!  Had to fav!
