Cleaning seat guts?

What is good for cleaning corrosion and some rust off of seat guts? I may just but new guts on eBay if I can find these right ones. I was going to try 409 first then use rust jelly and some degreaser, any other tips? The logos are almost flawless still luckily. Also someone said awhile back that guts could be on backwards costing length, how do you know which way is right? Are they mounted correctly?

Re: Cleaning seat guts?

I just cleaned mine. I just put them in a cup of vinegar for about 3 hrs at a time pulling them out to scrub them with a toothbrush. Then once they were where i wanted then I put them in some old oil I had, then wiped them all off. Came out nice.

Cool, I have used vinegar a lot for smaller bolts and nuts etc, maybe I will wash them and degrease, then soak in vinegar.

Well soap, vinegar, rust jelly, and lots of scrubbing worked great, better than the pics indicate even. Most of the grime is gone and looks a lot better. Will add some polish maybe later.

Re: Cleaning seat guts?

Hey Ya,
im looking at doing a similar thing. When you soaked it in vinegar did you put the whole steat in vinegar or you take off the steat guts and just soak that?
also how long did you soak for?

Re: Cleaning seat guts?

Here are a couple more options.  A little vinegar cleaned up these rails and a little paint covered the guts.

This set I wanted to look like chrome so I cleaned them with soap and water them took them to the buffer.

Re: Cleaning seat guts?

What if my seat guts have paint overspray, will vinegar or lemon juice remove it?

Re: Cleaning seat guts?

citric acid powder + water
Leave it for about 24-36 hrs

Clean it & handpolish it up and you have new seatguts
