1972 JC Penney Swinger
1972 JC Penney Swinger
My first 20" bike.
I jumped this bike probably more than any other bike I've ever had (off wooden ramps in the street). It's long gone, but fortunately, I still have these photos taken May 1979 on the day I got it as a family hand-me-down (yes, that is me at 7 years old). I swear, I was fearless on this thing. Couldn't have had the bars further back or the seat further down!
#11! I never officially raced this bike, but to me, it's still BMX roots! When I got this bike, I remember that my dad told me that kids got together and raced bikes (I probably asked about the number plate). This fueled my young imagination! I didn't actually know about BMX until probably a couple years later though.
NOTE: I have seen photos of these described as "Foremost Swinger", but I never knew it as that, so I'm not putting it in the bike title. It could very well be a "Foremost Swinger I"
These bikes were actually made by Huffy and badged by JC Penney.
WTB: Nothing, unless it's a real cheap local survivor score!
"BICYCLING DON'TS: Stunting, doing wheelies, or 'dirt biking' places stresses on bicycles far above design intentions.
Damage such as broken welds, bent forks, and 'flat spots' on rims will result" -- Breaking all the bicycling rules since 1977.

Re: 1972 JC Penney Swinger
Brings back some memories. I had a Free Spirit from Sears around that time..
Wife loves it when another package shows up in the mail......NOT...
Question is, is the spoon really there?

Re: 1972 JC Penney Swinger
LOL, thanks. Yeah, it was a sweet ride. Wish I hadn't dumped it when I built my first Huffy BMX bike from a frame my aunt found in the woods behind her house. Oh well. I just realized I'm drying off the bike after washing it in the pic. Nice.
And thanks to the admin/mod for adding the "bad ass jacket" comment. Yes... yes, it was a badass jacket.
These are the only photos I know of where I look like Ralphie from A Christmas Story, by the way, I swear.

Re: 1972 JC Penney Swinger
All the time! Set up the ol' 1x8's in the street on concrete blocks and launched off it all the time! I vaguely remember biting it a couple times, but that sure didn't stop me back then.

Re: 1972 JC Penney Swinger
I am amazed that you could ride it without sliding off the seat. Man, I wish I still had my Schwinn Stingray. Those style bikes are the best for wheelies.

Yeah I know! It looks like I had pretty good leverage pushing off the bars like that though!

Re: 1972 JC Penney Swinger
Great pic. Your story Reminds me of my first bike. Western flyer from western auto store in town. 20 " and had the same style bars as the old ten speed road bikes of the day. I remember thinking that was cool to look like a bigger bike. I tilted the bars back where I could hold on hammer fist style. I used to jump some crazy ramps with that thing. Actually ended up breaking the frame into. Right at the head tube. Lol. Great memories.

Wow! I had that same bike. I don't have a shot right now of it originally...here is after some generic BMX handlebars and seat were installed.
