Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

Nice work guys.. Just got a 79 team goose that has had the candy blue paint removed. Was going to paint it candy red but think I will give it a polish first and see how it comes up. Does have a couple of scratches that I'm not sure if I will get out but might as well have a go. Must be a sucker for polishing as I have also just finished an alloy 24 goose. Thanks for the great post

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

Okay used this method today on my 81 Mongoose. Very happy with the results. First time polisher.

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

Very cool. Give this newbie a little more info on this sonic scrubber. I'd like to tie this a shot on a couple of bikes I have but am not familiar with the sonic scrubber you are using.

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

Woot, glad I found this thread! Just scored a '79 Team Goose with more than half of the original red peeling off. I will strip the rest and follow your steps to have one good looking Goose again!

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

Very cool thread! I just picked up a JAD that has 2 different colors on it but im almost positive that it's nickle plated underneath. I need to go buy some stripper after work and start on this bad boy!

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

When you say fine sandpaper. Are you talking 1500-2000 grit? Wet or dry?
Thx

I have good luck starting with 600 grit and going up from there. You need a coarser grit to remove oxidation and scratches. I end up at 1000 or so, and then polish with Blue Magic.

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

I use the same method as paint on nickel for polishing.  Rubbing compound, polishing compound.
Nickel plated some parts using electrolysis,  its easy to blow thru it if you go too aggressive.
Results posted here look great,  go easy on it.

Re: Restoring old Nickel frames...

I’m new to restoring Nickel frames.  Did most of these steps, but still have little spot that won’t come out. Any tips? To smoothing these out?https://s3.amazonaws.com/uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/224796/f9049ef8-5937-435d-a48a-9836550375766161cbed33.jpeg
