1989 Hutch Judge II

I purchased this frame many years ago to replace an expert racer that had been stolen from me in 85. It never really got completed as I had moved on to DH mountainbike racing. I finally threw it together with old parts that were laying around. Now my 10 year old daughter has fallen in love with it, so I am now motivated to restore it. I will post pics again when it is finally done. Yes that is unstamped landing gear on it, I plan to chrome them, it will also have z-rims when finished.Unstamped brake bridge, baseball serial # ( US made by Hutchins) . I just added a new photo, it's not done yet but it's getting closer. It now has metal flange tuffs, building ( red white and blue)way cool z-rims now.
Ok, I have gone a completely differant direction with this one now, after coming across a Skyway TA that I just couldn't resist I took all the red white, and blue parts off of the Hutch and built it up black ,red and chrome just like the Expert racer I had BITD. ,hope you enjoy it, I know I do, and yeah it still gets ridden .
Hutchins Judge 2 (manufactred when they were still putting HUTCH decals on them),Stamped SE Landing Gear Fork.
Elina Seat, tuf Neck clamp, Hutch Post.
Takagi Cr-Mo cranks and spider, tuf neck chain wheel, shimano PD-MX15 pedals
Hutch Pro Bars, Suntour stem, AME rounds grips w/ flight donuts
Dia Compe MX 1000 brake.
Loose ball metal flange tuff 2's ,Comp 3 repros.
Hutch Pads.

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Nice looking bikes, and I too love the fact that your girl has good taste in bikes.  However, a baseball SN means it's Japanese made.  Also, IMO Z-rims and unstamped LGs would be out of place on this bike, as both were predominantly used in the early 80's.  I'd try to trade both for something closer to the mark.  Of course, this is just my opinion, feel free to disregard it and use your own. :D

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Gaijin, thanks for the input. all the research I have done lead me to it being a US frame as the brake bridge is unstamped and the seat stays are high, there were appearantly left over dropouts used on some of the US made bikes, I could be wrong though as Hutch has quite a sorted history(I guessed on the year..shhh). as far as the z's and landing gear I like the early 80's stuff, being 41 yrs young. I am most likely going to transfer it all over to an older hutch( though I do dig this frame) or maybe a loop tail PK. ,as I owned both as a kid. it's not as much a correct collector piece thing for me, more of a personal preferance. I believe you were one of the people that helped me figure out that it was a judge on the research forum. thanks again.

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Unstamped brake bridge and a baseball SN makes it a Hutchins.  And your welcome.

My Hutchins has no serial number, or stamped brake bridge.  US made
A baseball symbol is Jap made

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Is the top tube ovalized where it meets the seat mast? Even for a hutchins made frame that seat stay looks way high to be a Judge. Just trying to help you Id. What is the serial#?

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

It's definitely a Judge.  The geometry is completely different from the Pro Racer.

Yeah, the tt is very ovalized at the seat tube, it's a hutchins made judge with a leftover Japanese dropout. I did quite a bit of digging to find that out.I will be posting new pics in a week or so, it's undergoing a complete rebuild right now with a mix of new ride-able parts and just enough old school to be reminiscent of the hutch I had a s a kid. The goemetry is definately improved over the true old school stuff, I am actually pretty comfortable on it, most of the old 20's feel quite alien to me now as I have been racing and jumping mountainbikes for the last 20 years.

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

I got a Hutchins NOS frame (still in the wrapper!) and from what I understand ALL Hutchins frames were USA built. There were some with stamped brake bridges, some with serial numbers w/ base ball and some without. The research I have done tells me the Hutchins frames were all built here in the US and Revcore/CW used leftover parts (drop outs and bridges) on the early ones. I think these framesets were only produced 89-91. Raddad, you may be right on that year, but it could be a 90. 89 modles would possibly have the stamped bridge if I follow logic. Anyway they are very sweet frames and I hope to have mine posted soon. I have all the parts...now I just have to build. Nice bike dad!

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Thanks FrigidFrog, yeah I also have come to the conclusion that ALL of the huthchins were made here in the US, in KY.that seems to be quite a sticking point for some folks here, all I really know for sure is I own it :), the welds are perfect and the overall quality is top notch. The only reason I was leaning tward it being an 89 is that is had Hutch decals as opposed to Hutchins.

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Hutch stickers, 89 sounds right. Who really knows 89, 90, 91. The way they did it back then, who could make sence. Im like you. All I know is...I got one and I love it. I am waiting on my bottom bracket to come in, and then I start the build...shouldnt take to long. I will post once its together. FYI, Not sure if you would be interested, but I seen some Hutchins decals on e-bay today. Down tube and headset tube. Stay rad!

Re: 1989 Hutch Judge II

Thanks for the heads up FrigidFrog, I look forward to seing your build. I think I will stick with the hutch decals because that's what it had on it originaly and I had a hutch as a kid, as far as staying rad, I try brutha, i just kinda semi retired from DH mountainbike racing and still trail ride and dirt jump several eves a week' I switch up between my 24" quadangle and my 26" Santa Cruz Jackal for the jumps and skate park, I may actually try a 20" soon , but that will be quite scary I am sure:cool:
