Can't you just stick one in a vernier and then order them loose?

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

I believe they are 4 mm bearings and I probably have some nice ones from a purchase I made a few years ago. Remind me later...

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Thanks Troy!! This is what I found and was going to go to the shop and measure one with a micrometer. If you scroll down the page you see that Menards appears to have every size.

No way the balls are only 3/32".  I'm 100% sure they are not standard, rather are metric and I'm 99% sure they are 4mm.  Suntour XC are 4 mm, and I probably have some.  I may even have some from some Shimano's I rebuilt.  Just let me know what you need/want.  This is what I bought:

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Okay, I've got you covered.  I found a baggie that says "Bingram's missing balls".....these have to be the ones you need!

No really it says "from Shimano pedals".  I had a set of PDMX's that needed overhauling and so I took the bearings out, and put in 44 fresh new ones.  So I measured two bearings from that bag and came up with 3.93mm.

Then I measured two of my dozen remaining brand new 4mm chrome steel balls and came up with 3.94.  Match no doubt.  If you want 4 just PM me your address and tell me if you want used Shimano ones or the new ones....

This thread is awesome. Picked up a few pointers of you guys and here are the results.
To say im stoked with the outcome is an understatement.
The wire wheel is definitely the way forward even if you are picking them out your cloths forever.

This thread is awesome. I was just looking at my DX's today thinking about sprucing them up.

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Hey gents,

I agree, this thread is very informative, good stuff guys!  I have a pedal axle reference question, maybe someone here can help.
I have a set of Shimano DX's 9/16" that has 1 pedal axle stamped as such...R on one side and 26 on the other, instead of what is stamped on all my other DX's, which are stamped as such... 9/16" L on one side, and 27 on the other ??
I'm guessing just a different generation of Shimano axle or ? Thoughts
