Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Well i am sure some of you are not gonna like the stripping of the DX's but i hunted for along time for a decent red and or chrome/polished set so i had to buy the gold and do it myself..

I ended up buying a set of  gold 1/2 Shimano DX pedals but i needed them 9/16 so I used the 9/16 spindle out of the Shimano PD-MX15http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3030.jpg
Tools needed 5/8 wrench, 7/16 and 5/8 socket and small flat head screw driver. And tooth brush/rags and a bowl. for stripping the ano i use Klean strip premium stripper .This stuff works instantly defiantly use gloves thick gloves the latex ones WILL !! disintegrate trust me..Also some grease for the bearings.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3031.jpg
Use the small flat head to remove the DX end caps mine where trashed so i just poked a hole through them and popped them out. Once you remove the cap use the 5/8 wrench on the arm end and the 7/16 socket on the end cap end once that is out there is a washer and another nut you can just use the 5/8 socket to remove that one .Make sure you do this over a towel, bowl or box for the bearings. They will go everywhere.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3033.jpg
If the ends are rough you could sand them down with fine grit most of the DX pedals are them self's a little rough i have only seen a couple of smooth surface ones but more rough ones so don't do them to smooth if you want a good look.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3032.jpg
Once everything is out and off .You will have to take the dust caps that where on the 1/2 DX spindles off and put them on the 9/16. I clean up the pedals with soap and water it makes it easier for the stripper to work. Use a tooth brush to spread the stripper around and in all the nooks and crannies let sit for like two minutes if that work it around you will know when it is all off. Don't let it sit for to long it wont ruin the pedals it will just dull them alot in spots .It wont ruin them unless you keep them in the stripper for a long time.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3034.jpg
Next you should clean all the parts/spindle, bearings, nuts bolts and dust washers very well so there is no dirt or anything on them that will make it easier for putting them back together so you wont have to take them apart when you discover dirt in them. After bath in stripper i wipe up and clean the pedals again with soap and water .Dry them off and if you want polish them up. I only did a minor polish on these use some polish and a dremel that would work best or by hand.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3035.jpg
Put them back together with the (9/16 spindles) Left spindle with left pedal and Right spindle with Right pedal. Grease up the bearings which there are 11 bearings in each end dont use to much grease they wont spin well totally packed. I also use thread lock on the out side 7/16 nut only. tighten up adjust so they spin well and you are done .There is a guy on the boards that make repro DX end caps big_smile
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/saber417/bmx3037.jpg

Maybe useful for some maybe not for others thought i would share .Thanks..big_smile

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Nice job!

I recently took mine apart to clean & regrease. I haven't put my new caps on yet because I want to take them apart again and spray mine with some metalscast to give them a fresh look.I believe there are 22 bearings a pedal but looking at your pics I don't recall the black rings. Are they a rubber seal?

Thanks .Yes there are 22 bearings in each pedal. I said 11 in each end. And the seal is a softer plastic seal with two sleaves in the bushing. This would only be on the DX pedal. It is at the end of the spindle. I should take a pic for ya.smile

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Here's a thread I made on OS-BMX about doing DX's. I did pretty much the same thing you did (except switch spindles) but I also put in there how to paint them without painting the pins. It might be worth a looksy!

You will need 1/2" spindles.

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

the red pedals are NOS.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r183/caleb_K21/bike%20parts%20referance/JAD130.jpg

i should have made a tutorial on these with more detaied pics on the filing process.   i used 3 different files.  the most important part is start with pedals that dont have real bad gouges or ground down and try to get a set with all the pins intact.  ive done 3 of these sets in black and they almost look new..  its not exactly cheap to do this,  30-60 for used pedals that are good enuff to use,  the cheaper ones will be 1/2" so you will need to do a spindle swap like slogun shows above and getting the pdmx 9/16" is gonna cost you 20 unless you get lucky..

then send them to Chip@C4 you in for another 40-50 with all the shipping cost,  add the repro end caps for $22 (witch i dont think are available anymore)   so you can easily spend 100-150 doing these but end result is well worth it..   i have 3 sets of these restored in black and all are show worthy without a doubt..   all my pedals are on bikes sorry non for sale.

Does anybody know where I can purchase the softer plastic seal with two sleaves for the Shimano DX Pedals?  I recently acquired a Set and one pedal is missing the dust seal.

Thanks

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

*bump*

Great Tip and Tutorial!!!!! I didn't strip them, but I did switch the spindles and the instructions are simple and easy!

I've been looking for some 9/16" blue Shimano DX for a while now but couldn't find any so I picked up some 1/2" ones from Hunt in nice survivor condition and then picked up some black 9/16" PD-MX15's from NerdBMX and just finished swapping the spindles. I was even able to salvage the end caps on the DX's! Not so fortunate for the PD-MX15's... they didn't quite make it.

Re: Shimano DX pedal restoration and spindle exchange..

Great thread guys. In addition to knowing how to salvage the end caps, can the pegs be replaced on these? They look knurled as if pressed into the pedal. Is that true? And is there any supply of replacements if so?
