VDC Changa

I just snagged a VDC Changa Long on trash day and need to know
where to get a sticker set. If anyone knows anything I'd love to hear.

Re: VDC Changa

I'll have to get some pics posted. The stickers are there, seriously hacked. It has a light surface rust
too that needs to be cleaned. I would rather strip 'em and replace 'em.

Re: VDC Changa

maybe you should hold out for a bit on replacing the decals.   the real vdc decals are very hard to find...and having the original decals makes it more valuable and desirable my most the serious collectors.

you got a rare bike....the rust, etc will clean up easy and you'll have a killer bike!

That sounds like good advice. This was my bud's bike growing up. He gave it to the
kid across the street in the '90's. They've both moved. This was in the trash after
the second owner's father cleaned out the garage and got rid of the "junk". Score.

Can anybody id these cranks?

Re: VDC Changa

wow, that's a killer find...that thing is hot!

exactly!!!   saylor said it best "don't replace those decals".   a little OA (oxalic acid) bath and the shine will come back....and "you'll be amazed".  smile  it doesn't mess with the decals at all either.

please post a pic of the bars too.

Re: VDC Changa

hey man -

honest. you can throw the whole thing into the OA bath. tires and all.

just break it totally down and toss it into the bath.

the OA will bring it back so kick ass you wont believe it.

BUT - YOU GOT TO READ UP ON THE oa BATH.

I've done a post, and there are several other posts on the topic.

Like - the stuff is acidic, meaning you cannot use a metal tub, and stuff like that.

you need some small ventilation, liek a vent fan or something going.

etc.

but for real - that rust you have is nothing for OA - you are gonna freak out after the bath is done.

Re: VDC Changa

Excellent score! Those are GT power series cranks. They arent worth anything but they kept the bike going and that's all that matters!

Like everyone else has said, DON'T REMOVE THE STICKERS!

This was my bike BITD. My buddy owned the VDC. The kid across the street wound up with
my Skyway AND his Changa. He rode the bike (s) in the 90's, and this Changa is all that's left.

you should at least remove the forks and take the bearings off.  you wan't to remove all the grease before giving it an OA bath.   grease blocks the OA from cleaning the chrome.   removing the bb cups isn't as mandatory, but definitely suggested.

Re: VDC Changa

Yeah, I did take apart the headset. It's a ten speed headset I'm not familiar with.
It was about to give up the ghost anyways. All the bearings escaped the cage...ran all
over. I didn't know if I should remove the cups. Not an easy task unless you have
a shop.

Re: VDC Changa

That's a great find (or rather rediscovery), are the bars and wheels your old ones?
You'll probably know the framesets used 10-speed headsets originally, maybe that's the original one on there so you could try to save it.
You don't really need the bearing races if they are broken, just use a thick grease to keep the loose bearings in place when you reassemble, you might need an extra 1 or 2.
New bearings should be easy enough to find if you keep one for size comparison.

Re: VDC Changa

Yeah, this Changa is the bastard son of my bike and my best bud's bike.
I had a Skyway, OGK rims, CW bars, blah blah blah. My buddy's VDC had
Araya rims, RL bars, ETC. ETC. ETC.  We both GAVE our bikes to the kid
across the street when we moved on in the 90's. That kid swapped parts,
added new parts, etc. Eventually, that kid moved on, joined the Merchant
Marines. Found a VDC with OGK rims and CW Bars in the trash on pickup
day! I wish my Skyway was in that trash pile!

Re: VDC Changa

THROW IT IN THE BATH ALREADY ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! !

just be sure and go study OA in the posts on the museum.

it is VERY important that when you take it out of the bath you care for it right then.

you cannot let it sit around, not even for 30 minutes.

Re: VDC Changa

Yeah, the only thing stopping me is getting a container.  I've sourced the OA,
and just need to find a container that will fit the frame. I'm unemployed at
the moment, and even $20 is hard to come by. I AM, however, accepting
donations. Send to "Save a VDC" at PO Box blah blah blah...........

You could build a tub for a couple of bucks.  I took a 2x6 stud I had and made a rectangle box that was just bigger than the frame. Laid the 2x6  box on the ground and stapled a lawn and leaf garbage bag to the top to make a tub. It worked great. The only thing is to remember to lay the frame in gently so as not to rip the garbage bag. Give it a try.

It's bath time! I used two 12 oz. containers of OA crystals.
That's all the hdwre. store had. I hope it is a hot enough
