1978 Mongoose Motomag

"The Bicycle Built To Fly"

My 11 yo daughters bike. Everything has it's OG finish, nickel frame etc. With the exception of the chainring. I used the "canodizing" method on that (wanted to see how well it worked, and I dyed the tuffs to even the color difference out). This project started out with an 81 survivor, but the 81 had bad chrome. So I got the 78 frame, and put most of the parts on it. I changed out a few things that suited me better, and here it is. I'm very happy with the results, and was more than happy to build it for my daughter.

Frame : – Nickel “chatsworth” motomag (with repro decals)
Forks : chrome, drilled Tange 1200 pinched
Handlebars : Mongoose SS bars
Stem : Pro-Neck
Grips : Oury
Headset : Tange
Seat : diamond pleated
Seat post : Mongoose SS
Seat post clamp : Suntour
Cranks : Takagi 175
BB: Takagi?
Chain Ring : Takagi 44t
Pedals : KKT Lightning
Chain : KMC chrome 1/8”
Front brake: Dia Compe 1021 (1981) w/ skyway pads
Front Brake cable: Dia Compe 1981
Wheels : stamped Tuff I’s w/ Bendix 76 CB
Tires : Kenda moto-x tread 2.125
Pad set: OG mongoose

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

Well done TXF!!! smile The OG finish is really sparkling and the red accents make the whole build really nice. Great job on those Tuffs too.

I'm sure your daughter is thrilled with dad's awesome custom Mongoose bicycle he built just for her! More dad's should do that... So much better than grabbing a WalMart special!!! tongue

Built to Fly!wink

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

Thanks a bunch, guys! Glad to see it's already here in the museum. cool It was a lot of fun, but I have to admitt it took a lot more resto work than the last one did. Still, I'm happy with the end results, and think it turned out great. I'm really happy for her and hope she likes it as much as I would have at her age. I know she was pretty stoked about it when I told her I was gonna build it that day, and she didn't hesitate to take it for a spin when it was done.

I need to park it next to the 79 and soak in the old school goodness. cool big_smile

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

Got some better pics today. I'd like to take new pics of all the bikes in the spring so the pics look a little better with green grass vs dead brown grass. LOL

Re: 1978 Mongoose Motomag

Some double the fun shots of both geese. cool Scrounging some remaining parts for a 3rd goose build, an 81 frame I had left over. I have most of the parts.. just lacking a couple of things.

Thanks, bro. Yeah, I'm no pro photographer.. so like many, the pics don't really do the bikes justice. I was very happy with how all three turned out though.

Thanks guys.

freedo, they all are pretty much as found. I only had to do a little quick dye job on the front red mag. I guess it was parked in a garage, and the front wheel must have got sun, and had some very slight fade to it compared to the rear. About 10 minutes in the dye and it matched the rear.
