There's some great info in here. Let's try to keep the BS to a minimum. skinnygmg
okay, we all know '86 was a funky ass year for GT...framesets being made all over the place (japan, taiwan, USA)
its time to get to the bottom of all this, haha, some have 3 holes on the rear dropout, some have 4
it is my theory all the 3 hole '86 GT's were made in japan and have a G5 serial #
so...if you have an '86 Perfomer - Pro Performer - World Tour - Pro Freestyle Tour....post up the info!
i think this could be a great reference for a year that was so confusing
PICTURES WELCOME!
something like this (here is the info for a couple of mine so far)
Green Pro Performer (original paint/stickers)
Serial: G5J05495
4130 Stamp: YES
Holes on dropout: 3
White Performer (original paint/stickers)
Serial: DS60926466
4130 Stamp: NO
Holes on dropout: 4
Blue Performer (original paint/stickers)
Serial: DS60981689
4130 Stamp: NO
Holes on dropout: 4
Unknown Original Paint/Stickers
Serial: 2861177
4130 Stamp: YES
Holes on dropout: 4

Taiwan '85 GT Performers that had 3 holes in rear drop outs had the serial G5...stamped under the BB too.
86 ones that had 4 hole rear drop outs also had the serial under the BB and all of the ones i had started DS....
I know the deal with US 84 pre stamped, US 84 stamped, US 85 stamped and Taiwan stamped 85's if anyone wants to know.

Here are a couple of shots of the head tube angle. When I first brought the World Tour home I thought the fork was bent. It really sticks out sitting next to the other 86.

Going by Phil's serial numbers, it's safe to say that GT switched from World Tour to Freestyle Tour as early as June of '86. Could have been sooner, but we'll see as more info comes in.

Here are 2 more. The blue one I bought already refinished and I applied the decals. The pink one may be a 1985, see what you guys think. It is U.S. made serial # is on the drop out and it's definitely all 4130. Both of these have 4 hole drop outs. Both are stamped 4130
Pink 12851821 FS stamp under #
Blue F6058538

That pink one was made in December of '85, making it an '86 model when it was made. Nice collection, Phil!

Wow! That better be a really good story lol. Alright, I think these are the last ones I have. The yellow one seems like an 87 serial# but, it doesn't have a lower brake bridge. Any thoughts? Bare frame set is not stamped 4130. I can't tell on the yellow one because the paint is way too thick. I'll blast it next week.
Yellow DS70570642
Bare DS61052092

Re: - OFFICIAL: 1986 GT Performer Thread -
Phil Wood's '86 PFT is a G6 serial as well. I wonder if these were left over frames (because of the 3 holes on dropout) that were used to make the Freestyle Tours once they had to start changing the name of the model. Those were made in Japan, where the World Tours were being made. Duddy's and Phil's bikes are a month apart.
Maybe we should also take note of the 3-hole dropouts and where they were made. For example, do all 3-hole dropouts have the G in the serial number and made in Japan, while 3-hole and serial on dropout were made in U.S? Do the DS6------- and F6------ serials all have 4 holes and made in Taiwan or elsewhere? Very interesting.

Let me help you out here a bit:
Your frame was made in December of '85 as an '86 model GT. not sure as to what model it was or if it was even sold as a complete bike or just a frame set.

Re: - OFFICIAL: 1986 GT Performer Thread -
I want to say that the ones you'll see a difference in the headtube angle would be between those frames that were actually made in '85 and those that were made in '86. There are '86 model Performers that were made in '85 therefore had the angle like the '85 models. Did I even make sense here?

Sorry i did mean Japan not Taiwan. Your correct.
Just to make it a bit more interesting.... The ones you see with 4 holes in rear drops and the FS and serial number stamped in drop out were 'apparently' 84 framesets that were left over by the US fabricators and then re-issued in 86 with the insertion of the extra hole to make them look ike 86 framesets.
Not sure how true this is. but it would make sense.
A member of a UK site had one of these and we didnt understand why he would have an 84 frameset with 4 holes in. When he showed us the pics of the bike before the resto it was a clearly a 86 spec bike.

My 86 World Tour has the very steep head tube angle while my 86 PFT does not. I posted pics earlier in the thread. I will try to take better pics later. I am curious what determined the head tube angle too.
