1987 Schwinn Predator Free Form

1987 Schwinn Predator Free Form

My main 20" rider. Mostly not stock.

Custom "rat rod" build.

Unfortunately, since I picked this up as just a frame/fork with no stickers, there's no way (that I know of) to tell whether this was a BG or a TC for 1987. In '87, Schwinn released an all new frameset for the Free Form EX, and re-used the same frame design as was used on the 1985 Free Form EX for their lower-end freestyle bikes, the BG and TC. The only difference in the frame was the small welded-on rotor bracket on the headtube. (I have an '85 Free Form EX frame to compare to). Also gone was the awesome '85-'86 tapered forks in place of these straight chrome forks. Still, a very nice frameset.

Parts list:
Frame: 1987 Schwinn Free Form BG/TC, almost identical to 1985 Free Form EX. Note the bi-oval tubing on main tubes near headtube. Trick.
Fork: 1987 Schwinn
Wheels: Araya 48's with hubs marked "KK" inside a swirly-Christmas-tree-lookin' logo.
Tires: Cheng Shin whitewalls
Pegs: GT
Chain: KMC red/black
Spider/Chainwheel: Haro Uni-Directional
Cranks: 175mm from the same Haro ('87 I think) that the spider/chainwheel came from. Nicely patina'ed appropriately for this build.
Pedals: Victor (thinking about using something different)
Seat Post: Schwinn 25.4mm chromoly (correct for this bike)
Seat Post Clamp: Schwinn 25.4mm alloy (correct for this bike)
Seat: Fakeinator
Rear Brake: Dia-Compe centerpull
Front Brake: Dia-Compe Bulldog
Brake cables: new from Porkchops with stainless steel cables
Stem: ACS (from an '85 Free Form EX)
Bars: UNKNOWN (If anyone has any idea, please help)
Grips: new A'me
Stickers: "Charger" sticker is vintage, I believe from a road bike, but not sure. The rest courtesy of Archie's Ice Cream, Vans, Haro, and Rocket.

This bike rides incredible. The '80s Schwinn freestyle bikes are way underrated and have always been near the top of my list as riders, which is why I built this bike. Steep headtube angle make this bike crisp and agile, and long top tube length makes it comfortable to ride.

Last pic is before stickers. Pretty clean looking, but I love the sticker bomb look on this.
