1991 Dyno Detour
The movie bike from Stay Tuned!
I'm happy to be able share with everyone The movie bike from Stay Tuned!
About the movie:
"Most people would love to get into television... Helen and Roy have 24 hours to get out of it.... literally
One of the clips from the movie:
I remember seeing this movie in the theater as a kid and loving the bike. My friends and I had many arguments about what the bike was. When I got back into BMX a few years ago and joined the museum one of the first things I did was look for this bike and to find out what it was, was it factory or custom etc. I found a few post about it and found out it was a modified 91 Dyno Detour. There were a few post about it but no one knew what had happened to it. It was a one off custom bike for the movie most likely modified by a Prop House for the movie. It's possible Dyno made it for the movie company as a promotional item but until I find out other wise I'm betting it was done by the Prop Company in charge of props for the movie. But why would they have done a custom bike? The credits have GT Bicycles in it so they obviously had permission from GT to use the bike so why modify it? It had all the decals on it and they made no attempt to cover up who made the bike likes TV shows and movies do for products they don't have the rights to use the logos/company names for.
The movie was made in 1991 and released in 1992. It looks like after that the bike was put into the Prop companies warehouse for keeping and then completely forgotten about for the next 23 years. This seems odd that the prop company kept it, didn't return it to GT and as far as we know never used it in any other movie or TV show. Skip forward to 2015 and a Prop builder stumbled upon it in an outdoor bone yard at the prop company storage facility. It had been sitting outside for unknown amount of time but there was no mistaking what it was! This is where I came into the picture. It came down to being in the right place at the right time and thanks to other awesome people in our community (Neil/Angel/Ryan/Abel) I was given the option to buy the bike from the Prop House! I was ecstatic and jumping for joy. To me it was about finding a bike that had been lost to time and being able to save it for the community to enjoy again. Originally my intent was to restore it back to silver screen perfection but after receiving it I found it was in much better condition than expected so my intent now is to finish cleaning it up, put the original parts back on it, leave it as is and hopefully bring it to BMX shows for others to enjoy. Its only original once and it doesn't need to be restored in order to be rideable and enjoyable. Even the grips and tires are in great shape and rideable.
