1982 Hutch Pro Racer
1982 Hutch Pro Racer
Hutch Pro Racer pre-serial number edition thought to be an early MCS made frame and fork.
This frame and fork also has unusually high mounted seat stays and a fork profile which is different from the later Hutch models. If you are thinking these are pro Raider forks, then you would be wrong as they are welded up tightly at the bottom unlike the pinched end caps on the raider forks. Fork brake hole was drilled later as the back hole is crooked. Looking for a set of cranks worthy of this build, something like Gen 3 Profiles or some 401 flights.

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
I am pretty sure the forks on my green 82 pro racer are also MCS made there non drilled but look like later pro raider forks with the pointed arch Any pics of your forks from the front ???
so i can compare them for ya. Also ive heard straight from Profile Racing that in 1981 the were making all of hutchs frames ..So your's can possibly be a 82 but you know how near impossible it is to ever really know correct years from 81 to 83 with hutch.
OH just remembered to be a MCS frame your frame would have a cutout in the bottom plate of the rear chainstay ...Theres a pic of one in the pandora hutch website .BUT as you say your forks have been drilledout !! ...(figures ) meaning they were once Non drilled same as mine they sound like the same forks i have and are most likely MCS forks too.
AS for your high chain stay thats a mystery for sure very cool frame with that double stamp will be a unique build no doubt

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
Ok yeah those arent the same as on my pro racer If you want to see the ones on my bike go to the Forums section and click hutch forks my lime green pro racer is in there i used my forks in that forum section you see mine are non drilled but have the pointed arch like later pro raider forks .
Your forks are normal early Pro racer forks Sucks some one drilled a brake hole .
Anyway your frame is the real mystery !!
Those high chainstays remind me of the hutch judge but the frame would have a oval down tube or TT i forget which ...
Cool rare frame no doubt im wondering if its even possible that its a thruster made hutch frame ..Just a guess........ I have one but the brake bridge is completly blank on mine

79Supergoose. Your green forks are exactly the same as mine, except for the home cooked brake hole drilling. That's interesting. Thanks for the reference to your pics.
Cheers.

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
The geometry on this frame looks off from a normal PR too. From front to back this looks to me like a Profile Champ Pro without the center bar. Very interesting. I'd probably have had that brake hole welded back up before painting it, but that's just me...

I'm just browsing around trying to educate myself and this caught my eye. If you look at the 81 Hutch Special K Junior Replica in the museum, you'll notice that the seat-stays are extremely high on that too. I know yours is not a Junior, but just took notice of the seat-stays. There are so many inconsistancies with Hutchs from '80-83', such as the brake bridge. I just posted my Hutch Junior Racer to the museum. So I went to take a look at 79supergoose and noticed his brake bridge is also mounted where ours is. If you take a close look at other Hutchs, you'll see the brake bridge set further in to the seat-stay. Since mine was powdercoated, we seem to think our brake bridge was replaced. So... from the stamped to no stamped, to high/low seat stays, to serial/no serial number... I guess it will always be a mystery, huh? Regardless, they are beautiful bikes. I love mine... and I enjoy riding it!

I don't think we will ever know what was made when or for what reason. Just adds to the mystery and popularity of the brand I guess. I love them as well. Takes me back to childhood!

I am in the middle of building a Thruster made Hutch it was made around the same time. ( I THINK) LOL but neat to have some thing differant for sure. that should be a sweet ride when you are done.

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
According to JDB, all the 81's brake bridge's "Hutch" were ingraved, NOT stamped, and with the drilled forks(YOU say they were drilled after), you have an 83' or later.
But I guess the owner of Hutch could be wrong... ![]()

Um, of course he could be wrong. John didn't buy Hutch until last year. He sure as hell wasn't involved with Hutch from 80 to 83.

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
Thanks for the advice guys. I really don't know what year it is, but it doesn't bother me too much. I just love the individuality of it. I will never sell it, so value doesn't concern me.
This is a very slow build and I am just building the wheels up now. NOS Chrome Araya Aero rims, NOS Bullseye hubs with red anno centres and polished flanges, S/S spokes with red anno nipples!
Can't wait to finish them.

Re: 1982 Hutch Pro Racer
This build is getting closer to completion. Score the Deep H stem last week and now only need cranks and a bit of chrome work! I cannot afford Hutch cranks, so some Redline single pinch full wrap or 2nd or 3rd gen Profiles would be nice!
