1976 Mongoose Motomag
1976 Mongoose Motomag
Late 75 build, sold as a 1976 model. Small seat stay gusset confirms this.
1976 mongoose motomag bmx bike that I built in less then a week using era correct parts i had from the 70's . New mongoose motomag decals and new CHENG SHIN C-183 tires where used to finish off this bike. I'm still looking for some clear winners circle grips to replace the black ones on the bike now. Also i have some non stamped black mongoose pads on the way and this bike should look nice .

Beautiful build! Is that the original nickel? Looks amazing. That top tube really does look short, though!

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
My cousin had a shorty like that and I rode it once and only once too. My knees hit the bars and my feet came off the pedals and I hit the pavement, hard. No more shorty for me after that. Still a beautiful bike though

Just don`t do what I did. I was riding pretty hard too. It was also about 20+ years ago that that happened.

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
Fiorst year was said to be 78 but some speculate there was one made in 77 with a coaster brake tab. I have pictures and details but most common knowledge will say 1978 and made in blue or red! The early ones would have Araya 7b silver rims, Roger DeCoster chrome fork and Mongoose suede seat. They also would have 170 mm Dura Ace cranks, MKS-BM1 black pedals.... and the list of expensive to find goodies can go on...

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
What is the serial number on your bike? I have 11994 and 10983. 11994 is a shorty and is my bike I received in late September of 1975 (I recently found some supporting documentation in my mothers journals). The other frame with the earlier SN, was the long version and was delivered to my neighbor about a month later. I spent several years tracking the long frame down and have now located the original Simi Motomag I's.
10983 has the square coaster brake tab and 11994 has the upside down mushroom shaped tab.
11994 is nickel and 10983 is red.

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
This is a good looking bike. I remember picking walnuts so I could buy my first set of Motomags right about 1974, 0r 75.
Keep up the good work. One day i'll re-create the Schwinn Stingray conversions we started with.

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
I've been looking at this "75" for a while and I am wondering if it may not be a 76 frame...
The seat stay "triangle" doesn't seem to flair towards the top like the 75's and also the coaster brake tab seems more of the one ply "squwished-hourglass" shape rather than the two ply "trapezoid" shape of the 75... It also appears to be Chrome plated not Nickel.
I surely could be wrong and no disrespect to Hayward at all, but it just seems that way from the pics. Nice super clean build though!!! ![]()

A "Squonk" is like a Mongoose only much harder to find...
