Re: Sugino 400 or Reline 400????

Power stem is the one in reference

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

I've always heard the Redline stem (pictured below) referred to as the Brute stem.  A quick look on Google images for "Redline Power Stem" doesn't show anything specific, but the same search for "Redline Brute stem" shows several of the stem in question.

Regardless of the stamping on the arms, Sugino was the sole manufacturer of the 400 crank set.

Yeah, I know that.  Did you see the post I quoted from the new member?  Was just trying to let him know that a set marked Sugino aren't considered Redlines.  The ones sold by Redline were marked Redline.

redline never sold 400s. they were only found on complete proline carreraII models. my 400s have a sugino BB and sugino spindle.

For a very short time, they were also came as stock cranks on the Kuwahara Lazer-Lite, at least they were advertised that way.  The Turbo Cranks also had Sugino BB hardware.

Didn't know that.  I'd seen the ad below from redline advertising both the 400's & 401's, so I thought they actually sold both.  Guess I should have said marketed instead of sold.

That set-up (minus the REDLINE stampings) were how the LAST Turbo Cranks looked... oh yeah, Turbo Dust Caps.  I always thought they sold them as a set to, guess I was mistaken.

What was coming on Masters?  I figured this crank was original to this bike....http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/37108/dsci28315a0e4da712.jpg

Re: Sugino 400 or Reline 400????

'85 Masters came with either Sugino or Redline stamped 400's. If they were Redline stamped, the arms would get the black Sugino sticker in the indent. If they were Sugino stamped, the arms would have no sticker.

Re: Sugino 400 or Reline 400????

later (85/86? and later i guess) haros came with peregrine. they were also made by sugino and from pics look
like flight cranks but in person, look nothing like them but they do use the same BB as 401 flights i believe.

http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/21460/img_13765965b7c874.jpg
these are 2nd gen i believe. first gen had two indents and not one (as shown) like flight cranks

http://bmxmuseum.com/forsale/pcranks1_blowup.jpg
a better look at peregrine cranks. note the roundness at pedal boss end
and how thin they are at the spindle end.

http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/21460/1stgen_rear5a0f1999bd.jpg
also note how peregrines are capped at the pedal backs. flights are not like this .

http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/21460/1stgen5a0f19a55a.jpg
these are how 1st gen peregrine cranks look. note the pair of indents (one long, one short).
