Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

Picked up a reissue AOD frame yesterday.  20.75 TT removable mounts.  It's been ridden, but no dents....i added the other stuff from what I had laying around.  I'd finish it right now, but need a chairing.  Stoked!  USA!

Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

I'm hoping one of you FBM experts can help me out... I just picked up a complete FBM at an unreal price! I just can't figure out which model! Mainly because of it's crazy top tube gusset. Without that, I'd guess "Stairmaster". I'm getting ready to paint it but I'd like to know the model first.

Someone told me the gusset might be a custom ordered add-on, for strength...?? I figured I'd check with you guys before I contacted FBM. Thanks, here are some pics...

Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

Did you get it shipped from the northeast US?  I wonder if that's Darryl Nau's old frame.  He had the head tube rewelded on his Day in the Life vid, not sure if they gusseted it or not.  Regardless, looks like somebody just cracked a weld and stuck the gusset on there so they could keep riding it for longer.

I would say Autopilot looking at the shape of the head tube, down tube gusset, externally machined seat tube and the crimped stay ends at the dropouts.

Autopilots were notorious for cracking at the top tube/head tube junction too. FBM went too far down the lightweight road, too soon at this point in time.

The extra gusset work on your frame looks like it was done very well, if a little ugly. Below is a link to my own Autopilot that cracked and that I repaired and restored. It's pure wall art now.

Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

Thanks "sycmatt" for the response. I thought Autopilot at first too, til I saw the Stairmaster. What changed my mind was the top of the rear dropouts. On the SM, its straight/aligned with the seatstay. On the AP, it's more rounded.
Does anyone think that this may be a custom frame where someone ordered that top tube gusset; rather than a repair? Cuz I know FBM is big on custom frames. Plus to me, the welds look pretty similar to other welds on the bike. Also, you can see the top tube was never cracked there. Not on the bottom at least. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/240511/img_20170731_183451599d041a5c.jpg

Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

Does anyone know if the older FBM Deployers have serial numbers anywhere? I just freshened up my girls bike and didn't see any distinct markings and I was just wondering because 'd like to re-do it the original color.

Re: FBM bikes here!!! FBM thread

Passed a guy in HB the inter day with an FBM sticker on his back window and gave him a thumbs up. I’m not sure he knew why (I have the smoking baby on my truck and it’s hard to see) but it’s nice to see “our people” on the streets of SoCal!
