Nice survivor there, and yes an unusual choice of parts, given what was available in 1981-82. The forks were probably replaced after the orig Traker ones cracked. The early forks tended to do that.

Nope the guy that I got it from said nothing was changed that the f/f is what mom and dad bought him.

It is very cool that you had this live on Brian!!  This bike was sweet when I got it!  I can't keep all of them.  I am kind of jealous but I am glad to see you told the story!  You have the details right on!  The guy was real cool and said that it just sat in the basement and he figured he'd sell it!  He made the right choice because Brian you are enjoying every bit of this one!  Right on!

Chances are if this bike was local to Milwaukee area it came from Classic Bike Shop . Rollie did offer this as a frame and fork package. He would have built it any way you wanted it. Another tell tale sign is the Ultra Dyno crankset. Last time I was in Classic there were still NOS Ultra Dyno's everywhere.

Rollie was one of the early distributors of Traker in Wisconsin. I don't know the exact story but he and the lady who owned Wisconsin Cycles were tight. I know that a lawsuit ended Wisconsin Cycle when one of the pierced head tube Trakers failed , kid got hurt yada yada yada.

I typically consider the Gen 2 the one with the horizontal oval top tube......not sure if that feature necessarily was a feature of the Denny Owens frame set or not. I thought the Denny Owens was a Gen 2 with slightly different geometry.

The Gen 2 has the horizontal oval top tube and pierced seat tube.  The Denny Owens has the horizontal oval top tube, pierced seat tube, pierced top tube, and a Redline style gusset at the down tube - head tube junction.

The Denny Owens was the horizontal top tube that pierced the head tube and seat tube. Like this:

Looks like they also made a pro with the same top tube that didnt pierce the headtube:

That's a sweet bike. I really like the geometry of that frame.

Really reminds me of the Race Inc RA7 frames, geometry wise.

Re: VDC made 1981 Traker MX 99% og

i had a Traker similar frame to yours. Came with Traker bladed forks.  It was around 82 when I had bought the frame set from a local Pro rider. Story went he won it at a race.  Light weight great chrome but the frame flexed more then I cared for. (I was a big kid) funny my other race bike at the time was my VDC. Great find Brian.
