I was hoping to hear a reply like that. Every time I see a sonic come up on CL or Ebay, I always ask about cracks and the sellers always say "no cracks". Then I tell them to check the front of the head tube and the bottom of the BB. The write back and say "uh...bad news..." I have yet to find one that wasn't cracked and was starting to wonder if this contributed to the discontinued production. If you haven't already, dbl check your frame and look real close.

I am having two of my frames welded. The HT cracks only. The two other frames with cracks in the BB will get an alum sleave welded in

anyone ever hear the reason why the sonic was discontinued?

Ok You just ruined my day!!! Thought Id go check my bike, hasnt been out for months and Lo and Behold a goddam crack in the HT!!! Im mortified, wasted loads of coin replacing all parts with OG NOS...

sorry about that
I know what you're feeling
actually I know it 3x
I thought I had 3 good frames when I found the first crack
the 4th I knew was cracked

all is not lost
you can have the HT welded
I'm using my frames as prototypes to improve the design
I am toying with an alum sleeve for the BB
the inside will be euro BB dia
I may do something similar for the HT
a sleeve in the HT would only add mass between thw bearings

Sorry to piss in yer Cheerios but those frames are junk. And in no way "rare" or "classic". WTF are you people smoking? An Aluminium mid school DYNO is equivalent to an '81 Chevy Citation.

Re: RARE 96' DYNO SONIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Acually it is rare...considering it was made 1-2 years ONLY....just like any other bike from the 80's that didn't sell a lot of and were only made for a very short amount of time....Dyno was a HUGE company from the 80's all the way through the 90's....and its the ONLY alum frame they EVER made.....so ya...RARE AND COLLECTIBLE IF YOUR A DYNO PERSON....So that being said....stay out of this topic with your negative remarks and poor attitude...were here for fun,not your "know it all opinions"....have a nice day.

i wouldnt ride a 15 year old aluminum frame. i dont even like riding an alum frame that someone else owned. i have but you never know how many times they wrecked it hard. im paranoid about alum ha.

THIS IS A 90'S RARE GEM - MR. HOFFMAN, MR. HAWK AND MANY OTHER CELLEBRITIES WOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE THIS BIKE AMONG THEIR COLLECTION.

Re: RARE 96' DYNO SONIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

To each his own I say. If "psycho" has developed a taste for urine in his breakfast cereal, that's his business. Live and let live

the sonic remains the real subject. It is not without flaws, yet it also has it's strengths. It's greatest weakness was probably it's limited lifespan. Had it been in production longer, it would have evolved and improved. If you evaluate the sonic from the eyes of a consumer, you can easily dismiss the frame as a failure based on the overall product. When you approach the design from a critical perspective, you are capable of identifying strengths and weaknesses both quantitatively and qualitatively (this is beyond the scope of people who pee in their food, wet the bed, etc). It's about identifying potential.

I have an old aquaintance back in Germany who does the same thing with cars. His name is Alois and he has made an art of taking Porsche 911's and refining them to maximize their potential. He has become quite famous doing this. Although a sonic is by no means the cycle equivelant of a 911, it does conceptually embody the potential for excellence through refined development.

In simple terms (for folks with urinal breath) although the sonic is not perfect out of the box, it can be made into something that exceeds the quality of products that must remain profitable.

Same idea with cannondale bmx bike those are dangerous but they are sought to find. To each has their own options on bikes some may think it's junk while some not.
