Rechrome or leave original?

will it drop value or better to keep OG if slight flake/rust? See pictures of 1983 stamped V bars from Redline 600a and putting on my 83 Redline PL-24. Thoughts? Plus/minuses?

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

Those would probably clean up well enough for me to use. Then again, I wouldn't use v-bars anyway..

Leave that frame outside when raining season comes around, and you won't have to worry about chroming those bars. wink

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

Plating, in general, is fairly cheap. It is the prep work that is costly. It needs to be stripped, blasted, any dents or dings fixed, polished and buffed, then plated again. A plater worth his chrome would be in the 350-500 range for very nice mirror finish chrome on frame/forks/bars.

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

Have you done a rust removal bath yet?  If not, try that first.  If you like the results, keep as is.  If you don't, get it rechromed.

Bingo ... !

Actually, you might be surprised what soapy (Dawn) and a Magic Eraser would do for both the bars and the frameset.
I'm not actually seeing flaking chrome in the pics.

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

I would use that money to buy cruiser bars for that 24 instead of doing a re-chrome on those bars.  Clean, polish, and find a 20 to put those on.  You may be pretty high up with those on a 24.

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

Id say give everything a nice OA bath and call it a day! I think the bars look sick on there! I love larger bars on my cruisers, 8-9" rise feels great to me, just like a larger bmx.

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

I have used 0000 steel wool and real soapy water with good results. Little elbow grease and rust cleans up real nice. Some spots may have a small black spot but better than ugly rust look. Redline badge should be safe too.

Re: Rechrome or leave original?

I also think they will clean up fairly well. For me, refinishing is a very last resort, and I don't think those bars or frame set look that bad.
Here is a set of cranks before and after 5 minutes with the bench buffer.
