Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

Very nice BB. Slightly heavier than a standard arrangement. The whole idea was to be able to use with multiple width BB shells. Don't spend more than $40.

Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

I think the main idea was so you did not have to bang your bearing cups in and out. They are bad as heck, and the wrenches would run you  close to $40 for a pair new. Another quality piece made by profile. They are heavy as can be though.

Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

so $40 doesnt mean worth 40 means thats a good price so that i could potentially re sell it? i'm thinking i'll use it on my 90 robinson pro but i still would only but it for a good deal incase i changed my mind

Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

I was having a little trouble with installing BB cups that were slightly loose (new frame & new cups) & Emailed Profile.  Christian from Profile wrote this:

If you had two more frames with American BB's lying around, I'd bet you that they would measure differently. Even if you had another Robinson frame, it would probably be off by a thousandth of an inch or two. American BB's are notorious for never being the same size. We make our BB cups to the median size of most frames, but of course, they are going to be small for some BB shells. The way I always used to fix it was to cut some strips from an aluminum soda can to shim the cups so they would be tighter than the frame.

We made the Evolution BB to solve this issue, but we don't have any of those left in stock, nor will we produce them in the future. The demand for American BB's is pretty weak these days.

I did measure with calipers 4 different BB's I had sitting around and they were all slightly different.

This would be another benefit to the Evolution BB; you don't have to worry about variations in the bb shell dimensions.  It's a really nice setup.  Too bad it wasn't a hit.  They were kinda pricey compared to standard BB's, which probably didn't help.  $40 would be pretty cheap if you found one.

By the way, I did end up using shims made from a pop can like he suggested (with standard BB cups).  I used the thinnest I could find, from a Red Bull can; worked perfect.

Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

Old thread but, I just got two bikes with these. But, no wrenches. Glad Profile still has a few. Cost me $26.00 just for the set of wrenches.

Re: profile evolution bottom bracket?

Try strong arming it.  I bought the tools.  My friend comes over, while I was waiting on the tools to show up.  Grabs each cup....applies some heman and out it came.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.
