1985 GT Mach One - Project in Progress

Hey folks... thought I'd share the Mach One project I'm currently working on.  I just picked this up from Charlie B a few weeks ago...

Here's how she looked before Charlie completely tore it down, packed it up, and shipped (thanks for all the time and care you took in doing this Charlie!).

As a young buck, I followed Greg Hill and remained a die-hard GT fan even after he left to form GHP.

In July 1985, BMX Plus! featured a test on the Mach One.  Preceding the test was this ad:

This is by far my favorite Mach One photo of all time, and the very best from this test:

I've spent some time cleaning up the frame, fork, bars, stem, headset, and cranks.  I've recently begun work on the wheelset, but haven't completed them yet.  I'm debating on whether or not to replace the spokes.

There was just too much white in its original configuration for my tastes, so I've decided to swap out a few key parts to mute down some of that bright white.  Here she is so far:

I'm looking for two things to complete this build -- I need a black GT-BMX frame pad (just the frame pad), and A'Me bubble font Tri's -- both in decent, but not perfect, used condition.

Thanks for lookin!  Comments welcome.

I saw some pads just like what's in the ad on Ebay.  They are repros.

Starting to get back into it.  More sane this time though.

Yep, I saw those.  I'm keeping them in the back of my mind, but I'm looking for one original frame pad if I can find it... I rather have a worn out original than a shiny new repro.  If I can't locate an original after a while, then I'll snatch up a repro.  Thanks for the heads up.

Re: 1985 GT Mach One - Project in Progress

Thanks for the props, buddy!  Yea, I really wanted to build this one up, but I had too many projects going on at the same time.  I'm glad you have it and are excited about it!  Looks like you did a really good job of cleaning it up so far.  The first thing I was going to do with it was re-lace those wheels up with some new spokes and nipples.  Keep us updated on it!   I like how you threw in the pictures of early test/adds! big_smile

Re: 1985 GT Mach One - Project in Progress

Yep - Like Crash said above -- nothing like touching a piece of your past.  I wanted that bike so bad when I saw those tests.  Chromey built up a Mach One last year to race and it sparked so many memories for me.  I've been on the hunt ever since.

I started searching for the tests (I have a few others).  I have about 3 or 4 scans of tests from BMXA and BMX Plus over the course of 2 years.  They both obviously liked this bike too.  The pics from the July 85 Plus accompanied by that ad is what really made me want one BITD

The frame cleaned up well and the bars came out incredible!  The pics (taken at dusk) actually don't do it justice.  The shine on the paint looks pretty deep after buffing it out a bit.  Once it's complete, I'll get pics in good light.  I can't wait to get this one on the road!

You are more than welcomed, bud!  Just like I said though, I'm regretting letting this one go.  It would go so perfectly with my 85' Pro Performer and Pro Series...but like I said, you can't keep them all.  hmm

Re: 1985 GT Mach One - Project in Progress

Redefining the word "patina." OK, it's not that bad... err... or is it? I think I really like it this way.

She's almost done. I just need to do brakes. Actually, it could really stand to have the rear hub re-packed, but it's ridable for now. Sorry for the night time pics -- that's the only time I've had for wrenching and shootin' lately though. I wanted to shoot it without a flash because that blue is hard to capture correctly.

I swapped the silver power disk out for a black one (thanks Scott!). I wanted to mimic the look of the white bike in the Tommy Brackens ad I posted earlier.

I took it for a spin and it felt pretty good. Seat might need to be adjusted a bit. It's hard to tell though as I feel really uncomfortable without brakes. Mo betta pics once the brakes are done and I get it cleaned up. I still NEED a black Santa Ana frame pad like the one in the Brackens ad... Please, Please, Please help!!
