Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
Hey thanks for getting back to me. I've been working on a '85 schwinn predator streetwise and I designed some rough versions of the sticker package myself. I'm doing some custom colors and I want to powder coat the frame eventually (I know some will be upset with me doing away with the chrome). I am very interested, I will send you a pm

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
OK, decals came off clean. Used a heat gun and various putty knifes to pull evenly and protect lifted sticker portions from heat.

So whats next? I was thinking of putting them between wax paper and placing in book to flatten. Then what, scan or send to a sticker guy? Any one want these?

I still might be able to help but I'm kinda of stuck at the moment for getting decals done on clear vinyl.

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
Couldn't stop at removing old ones. I deglued it with goof off, then used Turtle wax rubbing compound on the paint so it all looked like the unfaded blue under the stickers.
I applied the decals Hboost sold me and reassembled.

It is too late to run the air compressor so the new white Ame's will have to wait for tomorrow. I had to use a new chain and front brake cable. The brake shoes are hard so I will change those out. The wheels are from an '87 Decade that I re-spoked.

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
I am in the process of Making my own decals and i have NO IDEA what the printers need and who may be able to print what i need done. I am making General Hustler Fred Blood Wheel Cover Decals. They are semi circular in shape which would mean they would have to be cut,.. Die-Cut maybe the term. I would prefer to make them in a 600dpi photoshop workspace, but if i have to i can use illustrator. Does ANYONE know if i need to do anything special in my work flow to make this happen? Someone mentioned to me that colors printed on clear film need to be printed on white, so does that mean i need to make white mattes of all my work, and then the full color versions?
Will printers take cymk 600dpi PDF files? I really don't want to work with eps in illustrator. It will just take me 2wice as long. It took me a week to figure out the GENERAL font from 86/87 is actualyl a classic Mac font called Onyx.
Who knew!?
anyway,. ANY help would be awesome!

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
I've recreated many decals. You need either AI or Vector files with a min of 350DPI resolution. The higher the better. Then all you need to do is make sure you add the cut lines and the measurements on whatever art you are recreating. Make sure the colors you want printed are included in the reproduction and your set. A "good" print shop will take care of the rest for you. LMK if you have anymore questions. Oh yeah this thing about printing on white to print clear is something I've never heard of before. If you want to print on clear then get it printed on clear. I've never had my printer mention anything like that before. ![]()

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
hes talking about laying down an opaque white then printing a color on top of it so you get a better color representation versus just printing the color onto clear with no opaque white behind it - the color will be weaker looking with no white behind it.
I guess, depending on the process, you may end up using opaque inks and not have this issue.
I ran a press that used water-based inks, and we had to back stuff up with white when printing colors on clear.
But when I ran UV inks, I didn't need to do that - the inks were thick / opaque enough to not need white under it - but thats a different kind of ink compared to water-base - like what its chemically made of.
A printer can advise you. And not some kinkos quick copy place. go to a real label shop.
- Saylor
P.S. - using white could also prevent the base color (the bike frame color) from altering the sticker color - like, if you had a light colored sticker and put it onto a dark colored frame, the sticker color would appear slightly darker than desired, as the top color cannot completely block out the color below it.
.

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
Ahh, gotcha. I guess this is why those decals from babelovely suck so bad? I've seen pictures where they look great when they are on the white backing but once you peel and apply them they look horrible! Thanks for the info. ![]()

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
Right now I am in contact with this guy who specializes in re-printing vintage bicycle decals. I will let all of you know how the transaction goes. He has a lot of experience just with bike decals, he can also do a really thin UV clear coat over the top for added protection. Seems like he knows the deal, I will let you all know.

Re: re-creating hard to find decals...how to print??
Gotcha! thanks all. good discussion. i am almost done with the vector files. EPS files made in illustrator.
I have attached a sample. i am setting up a 1985 green Skyway Street Beat, as a tribute to the 1986 General Hustler Fred Blood Signature Freestyle bike. I kept the Skyway Magenta and White, But used the Hustler design and General font. Any reference to General is replaced by Skyway, and Hustler is replaced by Street Beat. and call it vein, but i replaced fred's signature with my own. But screw it,.. i got a bad ass sign.
The green back ground is just a reference. and i printed the sticker out 1:1 and wrapped it around the tube. My measurements were spot on. check it.
