Odd theory on 89 GT Vertigo ST's
Ive had a 89 GT Veritgo ST in my collection for a few years now. The more I look at it, the more Im puzzled. The f/f/post are 4130, stamped and identical (I think, could be wrong) to 86 Pro Performers.
Did GT just use a surplus of old 86 Pro Performers for this line?
If this has been discussed before, sorry, just have never seen it and its something I cant shake every time I look at my setup.
Thoughts?

The Serial number will tell. Post some close up pictures of the frame.
No offense but I suck at negotiating, so rule of thumb: When dealing with me just assume the price is firm unless I say "OBO".

They look similar, but are not.

I know my serial, its an 89, Im not guessing what I have, just pontificating on how similar the frames are. 86 Pro Performer & the Vertigo ST.
Heres my combo:

Does anyone know the differences between the two? Outside of the forks, which are different. The Vertigo "seems" to have a longer seat platform, but I cant say for sure.

Ask dyno-mike
Build it, Ride it and Break it. That what it was made for.

Angled platform bridges, different dropouts, way more vent holes, chainstay bridge. Basically, that frame is as much an 86 Pro Performer as a 86 Haro Master is.

What I meant was that the Serial number format will tell you where it was manufactured. From what I understand, SN's are usually stamped on the dropout or bb shell when the dropout or bb is manufactured, before the frameset is welded together. If that's the case... if it's showing an 89 date on the SN then no way could it be overstock 86.
I'm with bmxism. No way does that look like a US or Japanese 86 frame.

Cable guide on TT, way thicker stay tubing, appears to have a machined headtube as opposed to brazed-on reinforcing rings. Shall I go on?

Either way, the 88-89 4130 Vertigo STs are a great frame set. I'm restoring one right now with a long list of worthy parts. I never understood why the Performer was considered the upgrade when the Vertigo got the 4130 frame/fork as well as 48s.

Exactly, unless you just wanted that S curve down tube, seems so odd.

Yeah, it's hard to compare the Pro Performers / PFTs to the Vertigos given the PFTs and PPs had 990 mounts, cable guide inserts and the obvious geometry / build differences. But, for the price then and now, I'm really pumped about owning a 4130 Vertigo.
I'm putting on a number of PFT worthy parts along with a mix of parts that I'd never put on a PFT but am really excited about like a ACS Pro Rotor setup... which the Vertigo cable guides are setup for specifically.
I just checked Ultrahive's website for decals and the 88 Vertigo ST isn't getting any love... bummer.
