Spray Paint Brands...

Can anyone recommend a good quality (strong) spray paint brand... I want to spraybomb some smaller white components, but I havent had much luck in the past with Rustoleum, etc. They scratch so easily.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Have you tired Krylon

Or Dupoint but the ones for Auto Mobiles you can find them in the Auto parts stores

These hold up pretty well considering there for engines.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

I figured "automotive grade" would be the best option... maybe Ill get some from Advance Auto or something.

Thanks...

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Rustoleum is the by far the best IMO .... You just need to let it cure for like  a week before you start bolting things together. Krylon cures faster but is more brittle because of this. Some people have had good results with some auto paint supply shops that can mix auto paint in aerosol cans for one time use. The local paint shop here in San Fran uses DuPont lacquer. Autozone, kragen, o'reilleys type of generic auto paint is kinda crappy, but they do have a lot of color options.... Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Duplicolor auto paints work well. Rustoleum is fine, The key to a good paint job is almost all in the prep work though in my experience.

If you want a nice paint job that will hold up you need to be patient.

First scuff all surfaces well so the primer can adhere, and then clean the surface with prep wipes or rubbing alcohol, wax/grease remover to remove debris, grease, oils etc... Put a couple thin coats of primer on (10 minutes between coats) while the primer is still tacky... put a thin coat of paint on every 10 minutes until final coat ( I usually apply 3 coats) last coat can be a little more generous but don't over do it! Then put 3 coats of clear on 1 coat every 10 minutes... Let all cure for at least a week. After it has cured wet sand the clear with 1200, 1500, 2000 grit and then with your favorite polishing compound buff it out to a nice glossy finish.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

The secret to making any paint stick is prep.  The surface must be immaculately clean do not  touch with bare hands you must use the proper primer that matches your finish coat then you must spray several thin  coates and bake for half an hour to an hour at about 200 degrees once dry to the touch.  The results will be rock hard and professional.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Since it's white try the appliance paint.  They are epoxy based. Read if you need primer though since some epoxy paints don't require primer.  Also, the various VHT paints are good.  You have to see if white is available.  The chassis/roll bar paint is good on frames.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Whatever paint you decide on you will get best results if you can bake it.   This does two things, hardens the paint and evens it out.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

I like the ceramic-base engine paint, I get at NAPA.  It dries to a very hard finish.  Need to pay attention to the directions.  And like XJ says, prep is THE most important part of a good paint job.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

I ended up getting the Rustoleum appliance paint... seems to have worked well so far. Im gonna let them sit for about a week or so. Sprayed on smooth, dried glossy and hard.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Baking cures it and will harden it.  Otherwise it will take weeks to reach full hardness.

Re: Spray Paint Brands...

Nothing can be touching the surfaces that you want to preserve the finish.   Then just put it in there.   Check my thread on my RL-20II I have a picture there of me baking my sprocket.   The paint is now rock hard like OEM in just one day.

I am not knocking anyone...however, I sure would not want to eat anything that came out of an oven that paint had been cured in...just saying neutral
