'98 GT Speed Series
Just wanted to share this GT I picked up last night: '98 GT Speed Series, stiletto forks, GT Rhythm wheelset, 4 pc GT bars, GT cranks, GT piston stem. It's in pretty decent shape. No dings or cracks. It could use a polish.
Tell me what you think. Oh...Please excuse the crappy cellphone pics.

Any info/experience that you may have about these frames, forks, wheels, etc. please feel free to school me.

Re: '98 GT Speed Series
Thanks guys.
I'm not really sure on what to do with it. It was a spur of the moment thing. I have a couple of projects going on right now. And I really don't have time for another one.
I haven't had a chance to really ride it as it's been raining since yesterday evening. I test rode it when I bought it, and it felt like either the cranks/BB or rear bearings were in need of cleaning & fresh grease, or the sprocket was bent. Took a quick look and realized it was the chain. It was weird. The chain was 'sticking' to the sprocket. So I slapped one on that's been laying around. A lot better.

I bought it. Price wasn't bad either. I wasn't looking for another bike, but I didn't want to pass up on it.
And feel free to post a picture of yours as well.

After I got it, I looked some up on the site. Yours was one that I really liked. Very clean.

Very cool. Very tough looking. I'm digging the forks too. What size tires are you running?

Re: '98 GT Speed Series
Really?! They look bigger than that, especially the back.
I have a 2.125 GT AAPro that I'm thinking of putting in front. Just need to get another for the rear.

Re: '98 GT Speed Series
nice pick up, are the hubs sealed cartridge bearing or loose bearing? while I like how they look, I'm not a fan of the FSA cranks for the fact that while they may look good, theyre prone to creaking and problems with the bearings
The wheels came in a few different styles, the entry level ones had loose bearing hubs and single wall rims. The high end ones came with sealed cartridge bearing hubs (Ive seen some with all Black hubs, and ones like mine w the Silver machined out section) double wall rims, double butted spokes with alloy nipples

There are a number of posts with info on the Speed and Team Series models. Team Series like psychoduddycycles were different from the Speed Series like yours in a few ways. The Team Series had a built in seat post clamp and a CNC brake arch being the easiest way to tell the difference
My 99 Team Series XXL w a 21.5" top tube with the after market light weight Rhythm Series wheels (38mm wide double wall rims/ double butted spokes w alloy nipples and sealed hubs). I've had this built up since 93 or 94 but just added the stickers which arent correct for it

Re: '98 GT Speed Series
Thanks G. for the link & info! Definitely helpful and greatly appreciated.
I'm curious about this bike, so I've been doing some reading.
I did notice right away the difference between the Team series & the Speed series. I think the CNCed brake arch looks badass. Adds a little flavor, if you will.
As for the hubs, based on the info from your link, they are sealed cartridge bearings.
GT Speed Series- single walled version with silver sidewalls and black tops, sealed cartridge bearings
I was able to take it out for a quick spin about an hour ago. And I did notice the creaking of the cranks. Is that just how they are? Is there a way to remedy that?

I haven't figured out a way??? Maybe someone else has?? I have a set on my Robinson Pro24 and every time I ride it it drives me nuts. I've taken them apart 4 times and used every trick I know for alloy mountain bike cranks and they'll stay quiet for awhile, but the creaking returns

I thought about polishing the cranks, but decided to keep its original finish. I know those cranks look badass polished, but I like some things original.

Great choice. I think the cranks look better "natural".
