Wow, looks sore and not sure any shin pad would have stopped that, to far round to the back of the leg. Still now it's clean and stitched - just show it off....

Nasty Scar for sure, but.
Somethings not jellin. MTB's rarely lose their chain. Hence when he said he's not sure if it came off. He might know, due to the fact he rode the bike home. Single speed chain derailment I can see, MTB I've only had happen once due to a broken chain.
None the less, he's a lucky guy thats all he got.

Jump a gear, happens with the slightest maladjustment of the derailleur.
