Cranks! Suggestions please!

Hello my well and good friends!

I am trying to decide what cranks to get for my PK Ripper and since I am new to the 3-piece world, I figured I would ask before spending. I am looking for a set of cranks that are strong. I don't really care about weight or cost here. I am a big guy and I know how to use my weight to my advantage. That means I apply A LOT of torque to the cranks. So I ask, who makes the strongest cranks?

Also, Since I am tall (6'4") what lengths should I look for?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

Is this a new-school or old-school bike?  Racing or freestyle?  Does your Ripper have an American or Euro bottom bracket?  at your height, I would assume that 180+ on the length would be in order.

Since it is a brand new PK Ripper, I am leaning more New school. Ideally, I want to run a 36t chainwheel. I don't know what size the BB is (sad, I know.)

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

Profiles. Get the no boss ones and go for a spline drive chain wheel while you are at it. 180MM would be the minimum length you should use. 185s would be good for you as well.

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

The retro PK Rippers they made for the last few years are American BB, but all of the new race frames are Euro.  The Profile suggestion above is a good one, and Profile makes cranks longer than 180 if you decide you want to go there.  For a race bike, Shimano DXRs are probably the stiffest/strongest crank on the market, I think 180s are the longest they come in and they are limited to Euro BB unless you use an adapter.

I thought I read somewhere that the XLP complete has a euro BB, and since the XXL Team is based on that frame, that it should have a euro BB as well. No plans of racing for me.

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

I snapped my right side Redline Device crank after about 1 year of daily rider curb jumping & hard pedaling. I ordered Profile DJ arms and feel they are stiffer and stronger no problems so far. For what its worth, I'm about 3 hundo with 20" calves.

Thanks. I don't know how my calves measure, but I am up there with you in the weight dept.

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

So, I figured that Profiles would be the way to go, but I wanted to be sure. So, what model and what length spindle do I need? Sadly, the documentation that came with my frame only specifies the geometry of the frame, no other essential info is given.

It seems that I found an answer to a question and raised another question: When does one need a boss(?) bolt?

To give further info, I want to run either a 44T or 36T sprocket with no spider (Ideally, I want to run 36/13 gears).

Go on to Profile's site (Profileracing.com) and look at their spline drive sprockets. They have sizes p to at least 44t. If you go spline drive, you can go "no boss". The boss is for the traditional sprocket/spider.

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

If your looking for strength and stiffness go with Primo power or hollow bites. Gonna run you about a 160 and you will never need another pair.  I run profiles on my bikes. And primos on the loaners.  You can file Em down to look like GTs too

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

I was thinking of suggesting these:
http://www.profileracing.com/estore/pro … oductId=78

but since they are closeouts, it may be difficult to find the BB/spindle for them.

Profile still has the spindle:

and I've seen the BB on eBay.

Re: Cranks! Suggestions please!

What I have used are the Profile Outboard Bearing Bottom Bracket kit, profile Cranks w/ cro-mo spindle and a spline drive sproket. his is the best setup I have found. Make sure if you go this way to get the 6 7/8 spindle because of the outboard BB. Before you pick the length what is your inseam. I am 6'3 but my inseam is only 31", I am comfortable on a 175 - 180, any longer it is not a smooth pedal stroke.
