Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

I have one NOS frame. An 86' Teal Prostyler. Can't find forks so it sits.ALL my other bikes are survivors and riders.I don't want to own a bike that I am scared of scratching. Some people collect for show and some people collect for the riding feel that different bikes have.I get both sides.I like to look at pristine new condition bikes but If I bought one I would have to ride it.I have new school bikes that I thrash on.So although I ride all my bikes I don't beat on my collector stuff.

I agree with the thread-started... nothing drives me nuts more than to see an 80's survivor parted out on eBay. OK, you will make a couple more bucks, but you are destroying history for a couple bucks.  If you are in it for the bucks, then maybe you are not in it for the right reasons.

This one I just got... I was going to go nuts and take it down and powder it, new decals, etc... but, the more I look at it, the more I like it as-is. The only thing I would do to it is NOS grips, chain and break cables and that's it.

Everything is original down to the tires and even the reflectors.

Hi, I made this thread to stress how much it hurts to see survivor bikes get parted and/or refinished. This is a topic that is always highly debated and i may be opening a can of worms but i love worms. When i first started collecting bikes i used to take the decals off and replace them with new ones.. Now i cant even take the bike seriously if the decals arent beat and old looking. If the bike is super beat a refinish might be justified but i would probably sell after that. I understand why riders would like powder because its durable and cheap but as far as im concerned i would never powder anything im thinkin bout keeping. I think it comes down to condition for me.  If it's beyond hope redo it.  If it looks good leave it alone. Todays chrome doesn't look like 80's chrome either.

My 87 Skyway Survivor.  Not all there, but that's OK with me.

People restore cars all the time. I wonder why the BMX world is so concerned about survivors?

If someone had the rarest of rare bikes... like the STR-1 and ran it over with a truck, uploaded the vid to YT... well it would make for good

entertainment.

And so what... it's their STR-1 to do whatever they wanted to do with it.

Prob get a thread over 25 pages talking about it.

Don't ya hate that when you have to bail on a jump because your repop decals aren't 3M like OG's ? Oh man, what really sux is when you can't even do a wheelie because the refin paint job is poly based instead of enamel neutral

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

I got a Trick Star from the brother of a kid that died back in 87.  I felt a little guilty for ripping it apart but the parts sucked and it was barely rideable.  I'm not doing a super high end build but I want it rideable.  I tear apart and rebuild 'em just like I did when I was a kid.  Some parts I sell some I swap.  That's what we did BITD.

This will never going to refinish or restore ever... It has lots of wear and starches but it's one of fewest better shape unrestored blazer out there that I know of and even better mine are early square gusset and flat dropout frame big_smile

This is a hard comparison as cars are everyday transportation-BMX bikes not so much.  You have a much better shot finding a nice survivor BMX bike than say a nice survivor 60's musclecar-even considering how many more cars were built.  Not to mention there are a few more parts to wear on a car over 40-50 years than a bmx bike in 30 years.  Not a real good comparison.

BTW parting out a bike is part of the hobby-if it were never done where do you think you would get parts to build YOUR bike?

+1 and
THEY'RE F'N KIDS BIKES TO BOOT.
Most people are in and out of here like a revolving door. They get a tingle in their loins to have "their" bike back. Get it, restore it, leave it, or whatever and then ride it around the block once, get weird looks from the neighbors and POOF disappear.
Long story short.....as the guy I quoted said it's just an old bike. It's not history. Nobody gives a flyin' squirrel what you do with it.

The non-parting-out of bikes keeps Porkchop in business

this post is not about parting out.roll

it's about  if you find a bike with 97% of the factory paint still in good shape.

would you keep it factory paint and just clean it up?
or
would you  then repaints / powders it losing the factory paint?

me I leave it as is if it's   a really nice survivor. like say this one I got
http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee232/FREESTYLE-FREEK/DYNO%20bikes/1Dyno001.jpg

but if it,s trashed  one like say this then hell ya redo it !

It's sports history.

Re: HELP SAVE THE SURVIVORS!!!

Bikes have no history? Ok. hmm Also original cars are way more sought after and valuable than refinished ones. Give back what you take out?? If you powder a clean survivor you cant reverse that. When a bike/frame or part for example is in original factory condition, to me ,it is like owning a piece of HISTORY. IMO if you take a clean original bike from 70's-90's and strip it down, paint it and smack all repop parts on it. Its pretty much new now and i collect old stuff. Idk maybe its a Cali thing. Whatever floats your boat tho. I HAVE FUN!!! WEEE smile tongue

And nice bike freestyle freek!
