Re: How rare are the original Suntour XCs?

There not XCIs. There XCIIs with Urchin cages. The earlier ones had 4 smaller teeth on the one side then 2 teeth on the other per side & were braced.

I knew the cages were urchins, I just presumed the were XCs because they were not marked or decaled as xc II

It was 3 teeth on the one side and 1 on the other.

Re: How rare are the original Suntour XCs?

I believe that those are XC-2's with replacement cages, not actual Suntour cages. The braced version came first with with the super sharp cages (XC's). Then came the brace-less with the flattened teeth (XC-2). I think that the brace-less bodies came about to eliminate the need for a right and left body. Also in between the 2 different models there are braced bodies with flattened teeth and brace-less with sharp teeth. I'm not real sure how that happened, probably just using up their stock.

Here is a cool pedal timeline.

Yes. I screwd up. 3 then 1 per left & right side of each pedal totaling 8 teeth per top & bottom side. Here they are post#2

I bought some brand new in about 88 and they were braced XCII's with the flattened cages.  I recently read somewhere that the brace-less were the early versions, and weren't strong enough for the pro riders.  They may have added the brace later for strength.  Who knows...

I have braced bodies with flattened XC-2 stamped cages as well. I think that they came out during the change between the braced/brace-less and sharp/flattened and were just sitting around for awhile. That is just a guess though. I know that this has been talked about quite a bit.

Re: How rare are the original Suntour XCs?

xc1 and xc2 in silver bodies arent rare at all even with urchin cages...the black bodied or gun metal gray xc1 and xc2 are , Havent seen a NOS pair and only seen a few pairs in rider and survivor condition went up for sale in the last 4 years

most sought after pedals by racers and freestylers IMO..slap on some troynloris cages on em and youre set....theres dx and speedtrap but it seems that xc's tops them both

Hmmmm now that you mention it, I might just have to do that.  Only problem is my ELF is a rider and I'm pretty sure I'll just thrash them.  madlol
