BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

Hey guys i bought a 3 wheeler for my mom last week. She wants to ride a bike but her balance is crapola! So I thought, hey, i know how to build bikes, sorta, whey don't i redo this one for her!!! So i am. The main problem i am having, is that it has a 3-speed gearbox on it. No cable. I have never in my life messed with something like that. So my question is this:

Is there anyone on here that could help me get that shifter/trans thing working again? It has the grip that twists so you can shift it, but i dont know how to hook it up. If anyone has any info, please let me know. Thanks.

I will be getting pics up of the project as i go. Showing you guys how i "pimp out" my moms ride! Should be a good time. I dont have a huge budget, but i got enough to make it pretty cool for her. She loves bright colors too, that should be fun!!

Will get the pics loaded up in a few. Hopefully this will be a good time for all you guys to watch! Something different anyway. Plus, I think i am gonna need some help on this one, so that is what you guys are here for!!! smile

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

If you can post up picts of the gear shift box and the twist shifters, maybe I can figure out what exactly you're seeing. I've worked on mtn bikes for 14+ years now and there hasn't been something I can't figure out yet. I know how the grip shift cable goes in, I would just assume you could replace that (unless it's new already) and run it to the gear box, kinda like a front or rear shifter.

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

will get you pics. There is no cable on the grip end. I have never messed with a shifter. I might need your number at some point if you can help me. Reading stuff and having someone tell you how to do something are very different for me. So if that is cool, we might be talking soon!!!! Thanks.

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

patience Daniel-san!!!

I gotta wait for my wife to get her car outta the garage!!!! lol lol lol lol The bike is to big to move it out with the car in there.

LIke i said, my budget is sorta limited on this one. My siblings and i are flipping the bill, but i dont want to spend $2000 on it. I was thinking like $350 between the 4 of us. That should be good. I just need to find some reasonably priced fenders. Damn, even the cheap one on ebay aint so cheap!!!!! yikes

pics coming soon. I am doing some research before i start on it.

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

That is a Shimano 3 speed shifter and set up. Unscrew the two screws for the grip shifter and you can replace the cable. Make sure you use a "Shimano 3-speed shift cable". They are specific to that set up. Don't try to use a normal shift or brake cable.
If you can find one local let me know I have some.

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

That's got potential! You should throw 20's on it, easier to find the fenders, and you could grab everybody's orphan front mags and hook that baby up. Plus it would be a little easier to get on and off of, just a thought...

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

when you get a chance wipe off the 3 speed hub and see what brand it is either a shimano or a Sturmey archer.
Your grip shifter seems to be the kind that`s made in England, so the hub might be a sturmey archer.
You seem to be missing a rod that is attached to a small chain,
This rod is inserted in the hub and screwed in, them the chain part is attached to the cable.

you should order the proper one according to the 3 speed hub
If it is a sturmey archer it should be dated with 2 numbers for the year it was manufactured 72 for 1972

Like I said that is a SHIMANO Shifter. It is a Shimano 333 3 speed grip shifter. roll

Re: BUILD THREAD FOR 3-WHEELER-MOM'S NEW RIDE!!

gonna do some cleaning up on this this week. I went back to work last week after being off for 3.5 months. I will get better detailed pics of all the parts when i get them cleaned up.

there is a grease fitting on that hub. do i need to take it all apart and clean it all up or can i just leave it together and go from there? Found some new wheels and fenders for it so that part is taken care of. Need new bars, stem, front brake and the shimano shifter. so hopefully all will go good when i get started on it. Don't need it till december, but would like to get it together and take it for a spin before winter gets here.

thanks guys.

greg
