1964 Sears Spaceliner
Modified for BMX
Thanks to Marty Brown there are three photographs of my first BMX crusier. It started life as a 1964 model 24" Sears Spaceliner. I found the frame in 1981 and started building a cruiser for BMX racing. It was cut down, braces added for support, and headtube angle modified. Low-end bmx forks, 26" Araya 7X rims, yellow snakebelly 26" tires - sometimes a street black wall tire was run in back as in photo. Seat was a Uni-seat it also had low-end handlebars and clamp as well as Suntour gears and Dia-Compe brakes front and rear with TerryCable cables. Although it had many wins, I am a poor welder and the frame eventually let go at a NBL National race and was thrown away.

That was a really cool modified cruiser!
It looks like a cross between a mini and a cruiser. Cool.

I never really fit well on a normal 26" cruiser so I made this one as small as possible. It seemed to handle very well (up until the frame let go) and we were quite successful with it. I believe that my gas welding made the mild steel too brittle and the frame broke. I do wish I still had it but who keeps a broken homemade bike for 30 years?

Great memory, I couldn't place the track, thanks for the observation on the Dorr's banners. Has to be Madison BMX.

It really was an experiment in changing traction, turn-in, general handling, weight, jumping and all that BMX was. There were actually two Sears Sapceliners that I built and both broke. I wasn't really that hard on them, just a terrible welder. I do have great memories of trying to make the bike very competitive at a national level.
