1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
I picked this NOS frame up from Wired a while back and have slowly been getting everything together to start the build. It's in beautiful condition, and *much* kudos to Wired for shipping this to South Africa for me. There's still a couple of things in the mail, but thought I'd get going in the meantime and get some input on how things go along.
It's mostly a resto build that I'm doing here, so chasing up original Fishbone parts where possible, and changing out those those I'm not happy with that I've seen on other builds.
This is Wired's original pic of the frame (he knows what he's doing when it comes to taking shots of chrome frames and parts a lot better than I do, so thought I'd use it here
).
Took a while, but also managed to track down the correct forks for this baby. They're not NOS, but in very good condition otherwise. Will have to sort out decals tho.
Just some minor surface rust on the dropouts that's been taken care of with vinegar already.
I picked up a set of rider Sushi bars a while back, and then a 2nd set of NOS bars after that. The rider set is with the chromers now, so we'll see how they turn out in a while. Hopefully they'll come back as I want them, otherwise I'll be using the NOS set. Or maybe I should just use the NOS set anyway ![]()
Oh ya, this may be a slow / erratic build - between work and teething baby, time is pretty tight ![]()

Do you mean the small grub scews that go into the bosses to hold the pegs in place?

Yes. the pegs screw in and theres a ring that spins for when you grind that u need the set screw for to keep the peg in.

Ok Gotcha. Yeah, those I need to sort out, but grub screws should do the trick I think.

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
On the pegs, I don't remember any holes or screws in mine. I built one in '97 and rode it for many years. I thought they used standard threads on the right and reverse threads on the left so that any grinding would simply tighten them more.
When I got it new from Dan's Comp my first set of pegs arrived mis-matched in the factory bags - I got three for one side and only one for the other. I hated the spinning rings since they sounded like little kitty collar bells when I rode. Took them off and never used them.

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
I think midschooler's referring to these holes on the peg bosses of the forks and frame. Looks like it's for a set/grub screw to lock the pegs in place. Looks like around 4mm diameter or so.
Haven't gotten to the kitty bells yet, but I'll have to figure something out there. Want to keep the rings, but also not keen on jingly bells ![]()

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
Got some work in this morning. Damn, Primo cranks are TOUGH! Working with 7075 aluminium versus standard aluminium is a lot harder and takes some getting used to.
Still one to go, but I killed my mouse in the process, so that's getting fixed tonight before I can carry on.

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
Awesome job on the cranks!! Too funny, I don't even remember those holes...
I have one Fishbone frame left to restore but it's in bad shape. Rust all over and a previous owner knocked the peg bosses off with a hammer. Pulling it out soon for a resto...

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
@midschooler: PM incoming re the set screws.
@wburke17: Nice forks, look pretty clean. I've still got to make up the BA decals for mine. Could you measure the length of those decals for me when you get a chance?
@Wired: Sheez, hammered off the peg bosses?! That's pretty impressive in itself ![]()
Not too much time this weekend to do things, so still busy on the second crank arm and getting that polished up. In the meantime here's a couple of the other parts I've gotten ready so far.
Used stem, in fair condition barring some surface scratches. It seems to have been covered in a clear coat of some kind, which was really where the majority of scratches were. I'd hoped that just cleaning that off would be fine, but there where still some more serious scratches left behind. So did some minor polishing just to bring up the shine. Will have to redo the logo though, that got lost in the process.

The seat clamp has been a PITA to find, and I've only managed to source a 22mm sized one.
So thought I'd try something here, and have it machined up to fit since there was quite a bit of material to play with. Bit of a close fit but should do the trick
. Oh, the small nick on the bottom right is when the nice lady at the engineers' dropped it down the stairs while bringing it to me
.

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
That stem turned out great - looking forward to seeing how you'll redo the logo. That really stinks about the nick on the clamp, although it looks like they did some really nice work. Sure beats using a file... ![]()

Re: 1997 Fishbone Big A$$ Resto
Woohoo! Cranks done at last and ready to roll ![]()

And some of the other Fishbone goodies that'll be going on this build. Mostly NOS parts where I've been able to source them.
I'll hopefully get the decals done this weekend, then onto lacing the wheels. I'm still waiting for grips and gyro to arrive, but thanks to an ongoing postal strike here they're not getting here anytime soon.
Worse news for the pedals. I was hoping to use DK Distortions on the build, nice and suitably beefy. Buuuut, seems they've gotten lost in the post
. Not the first time this has happened. Note to self - do not get items posted over to South Africa via USPS letter post (LJ or LC tracking number) - completely untraceable, right from the start.

Damn G, your polishing work rocks. I think the fish at Emmarentia dam are going to have boners when they see your bike ride past.
NEEDED: Hutch magnesium rear hub; Suntour High Flange rear black hub; Front black Sunshine Gyromaster hub
Keep it rad bru!!!!

Thanks man
.
Things just get weirder. Seems the pedals were held back at customs since the 9th of May (!!!! And no matter how many times I called them, nobody knew they existed), then a tardy notification sent out a few days ago which I received yesterday, informing me I'd won the SARS (our version of the IRS) spot-check invoice against customs declared value competition. If I wanted the pedals I'd have to hoof it down to customs, wave my invoice at them and prove that they were in fact, bicycle pedals
.
Anyway, get home and open the parcel to find that DK "platinum" seems to be more of a charcoal / gun-metal
. Not quite what I was hoping for, but maybe they'll work. Here they are together with the backup pedals I was going to use when the DK's were thought to be lost. Still prefer the DK's, even though the color's not what I'd expected.
