1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
Got this bike new in '90 when I was 14! Best bike I've ever had - still have it and ride it regularly today (2012)
I always took care of my bikes but I was very hard on them and rode them hard - I've split them in half before - so Dad did his research this time and decided it was time for a "real" bike. Since I was getting older and bigger he decided on the XXL model and I am so glad he did - I'm 36 and still ride this bike comfortably. The best bike I ever had. Super light, fast, smooth - perfect!
Unfortunately, I never got into racing but I did everything there else there is to do on this bike including breaking my collar bone. No regrets though this bike is awesome...it's never let me down.
It's in great shape and would look even better with a nice detail - but I'm planning on a full restore in the next couple years. Only thing I need is pedals and decals - but I will probably make the decals myself...I think I might go all chrome too but we'll see. Also, my bike never came with the "Team Model" decal and I was always annoyed about that - so of course the restore will include those.
EDIT - finished detailing it - super happy with how it turned out! Entire detailing thread can be seen here:

Cool bike, cool story! You should just detail it really good and do a survivor restoration. If you want to go chrome you might want to start with a different bike that's already chrome and have 2!

Re: 1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
Awesome bike man, I love reading stories about bikes that have a personal history with the owner! As the other guys have said, just give it a good clean up and light resto and leave it as is, you'll be glad you did!

I agree with the others. It's your childhood bike man! I would keep that thing original. It looks pretty good and a few scratches won't kill ya. Just take it apart and clean, polish and regrease everything.

Re: 1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
Thanks guys. Yeah maybe Ill just detail it and see how it looks. Would love to find the outer cage to the pedals. I know they are at my parents house somewhere.
Also, the stock bolt that holds the brake caliper to the frame snapped on me back in the day. And so did like 2 replacements...my uncle had to heat treat one for me...which ended up lasting.
Recently the crank to sprocket bolt stripped out on me and I had it machined and re-tapped and that seems good now. Ill post more pics tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Looks good for a 22 year-old bike. I say just do a survivor restore, and replace whatever is broken. Good job!!

Re: 1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
Cool story and killer bike!!
As the others have said, leave it as a survivor. I think it looks great as is. The decals and paint not being perfect is what makes it awesome.
Would you look at this doughnut?

Re: 1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
Thanks guys. Yeah I'll just do a new brake cable and tires and maybe a chain if I can't clean this one. I found the spacers and bolts for the outer pedal cage but have yet to find the actual cage itself! lol. The search continues...

Re: 1990 GT Pro Series Team Model
i wonder if it didnt say team model on it bc its xxl? i know the regular pro series had one piece cranks on them and had a tt that was an inch shorter, 18.5 for that year model. then the team model had the xl frame and had the 19.5 tt and had those 3 pc cranks on them. they were put together at the factory like that. but if you have a xxl frame then that might have been put together after market- bc those xxl frames werent available alread built. they were only available as framesets. maybe someone had a team model and snapped it and bought the xxl and replaced it. or built it up piece by piece. anyone agree?
