Just finished OA bath on this kuwahara. After the parts were done soaking, i rinsed them off, and used "Barkeepers Friend" stainless/chrome powder polish (in ajax type thing) and a toothbrush, little water along all the welds and hard to reach areas to remove the rust. Worked awesome.
FWIW, I am 99% sure that "Barkeepers Friend" is OA. Just thought I'd mention it.

I think it contains some OA, it is not straight OA. I have mixed a barkeepers paste to clean up welds and crevices on frames. Spread it on and leave it for an hour or so.
Eye of the Survivor
I check the WTB section almost everyday, please try and do the same.
You may hook someone up and make some money to buy more parts.

half an ace hardware OA crystals can, about 6 oz of crystals, into a Christmas wrapping container, about 6-8 gallons of water. Normally 8 hours will clean up parts, but the gusset never cleaned up so i left it in to keep trying. I kept removing the yellow substance, but the rust in the gusset never yellowed. Here it is, less than half of the nickel is still good (left side), half is tarnished, and after heavy buffing on a wheel, still looks like crap. Feels smooth, but looks like dung.

Half a can? I used three table spoons and it worked just fine. Might be a little heavy on the powder.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
A $5 Huffy I picked up for a rust removal experiment, not too shabby. There was some really heavy rust around the seatpost above and below and it didn't come 100% clean but wow what a difference.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
I used Barkeepers friend on my general. Took about 2-3 hours to get the frame where I wanted it. I took a lot of breaks to have a few beers. And not much time on the other parts. Just scrubbed with a wet rag. Kept dipping the rag in water and then shake some barkeeper on the rag and scrub.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
dts123, your bike turned out well. Barkeepers is definitely an option for anyone who wants to clean a bike. It combines the use of OA with a hands on approach
When I do an OA bath on a bike, my actually "hands on" labor time is about an hour. That is disassembly, Simple Green cleaning, OA bath wiping, rinsing, and spraying rust inhibitor inside the parts. Like I have said from the beginning, the greatest thing about an OA bath is the OA bath is doing all the work.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
CMB, Thanks and I agree with you about the ease of OA if you have the place to do it, never tried it myself but the results Ive seen in the museum show for it. I just was worried to try OA with kids and a dog running around and neighbor kids always in my garage. My bike, I thought was a lost cause till I found this thread and a few others. So many great tips in here.

I understand about the concerns. Again, your bike turned out great...a very nice save if you thought it was a "lost cause". I had a longer response earlier, but thought it was too wordy. Here is part of what I took out:
But, a person has to choose what is right for them. If someone wants to take a more hands on approach and doesn't mind doing the labor, then Barkeeper's Friend or something similiar would be ideal for them. If someone wants something less laborious, then a bath is right for them. In the end, all that really matters is that the outcome is acceptable. The method to get there is minor.
That is why Wired's "Best of Restoration" sticky is so awesome. He combined all the different posts that people have made, which allows for a person to look at those with ease and choose their best option.
I just wanted to give you my complete thought and let you know I wasn't trying to say anything negative about your work. It turned out great and that is all that really matters.

Will an OA bath damage paint? I'd like to use on a chrome redline brute stem, but don,t want to damage the red paint on it.

never messed mine up but id use at your own risk.
if you are gonna do it and you are worried just check it every few hours.
its not like it is an instant thing. it takes a while for it to work.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
Can I use this on a redline mx2 that has been stripped? I just stripped paint off of this f/f set I bought. The paint was in terrible shape and had rust in scratched paint areas. Unfortunately, the paint stripper i used must have been corrosive, because now the entire frame has a thin layer of rust. I am concerned about using the OA process on a non-chrome bike. Will it work?

Unless it was chrome under the paint, it probably has the thin layer of rust because the combination of the exposed bare metal and the paint stripper. Oa will remove the rust, but it will come back because of the bare metal. The oxidation won't be an issue until it is refinished. Depending on what you are going to do with it, you could just leave it as it is until it comes time to refinish it.

Re: How To Do an Oxylic Acid Bath
I have used barskeepers friend before as a paste with great results. I tried finding the recommended oa but couldn't find any around me. Then I decided to look into barskeepers friend and sure enough it says it.contain oa. I checked their site but it doesn't give you a percentage.
Well, I'm just gonna put some parts in a tub and add water and then I'm gonna put about a cup of barkeepers friend and see what happens. Will update Tuesday.

Is it eBay with which you have a problem with or on-line in general? You can also pick it up on amazon.com or chemistry.com.
Barkeepers Friend has OA in it but it's pretty weak. Also check for Wood Bleach....it's primary ingredient is OA.
I am in same boat here and bar keepers friend is only OA I can find locally and not seeing a change after 12 hours at ALL. Any idea how much needs to be used, any one tested with this product ?? I've been adding slowly but still moving like in this post as I dont know how strong his is compared to bar keepers friend etc. but agree it is weak. how much do I use, any ideas ?? or HOW much weaker than wood bleach ?? Are you doing a bath with Barkeeper's? If so, I think it would take a lot of it. I would use it directly on the material. As far finding OA, try paint stores. Like Monster-Robot said, it may be called "Wood Bleach". You can also try an independent pharmacy to see if they can order it for you.
I found this online, and it looks like it would be a total cost $40 to buy and ship 5 lbs of OA to Vancouver, Canada.
