My first old school build- 1987 Mongoose decade-whatcha think?
Picked this up as a survivor from a guy i met while riding one day. 1987 Mongoose decade all there but the mags. My goal for this project was to keep it as original as possible. I had the frame, fork, bars and seatpost powder coated super high gloss white, cleaned up the chrome on the original sugino one piece crank, spider and chainring. The pedals were shot, so i got a set of NOS MKS grafite2000's off ebay, they even came in the original box. theyre damn close to identical to what came on it. Put a brand new set of sealed skyways on it, shimano freewheel, cheng shin tires(they suck, they seem like theyre not even round, buldgy and roll like crap!) the stem was in ok shape but the cap was beat, replaced that with a NOS spin tech top cap, i cleaned up and painited and greased up the spin tech rotor. i just need to find cables that will work. seems to be difficult to find any. the 990s are polished but not installed yet.now has porkchop tech 77's original dominator seat, cleaned up nice. decals from ultrahive. enough talk, heres the pics. thanks for looking!
Night i brought it home

Back from powder

Sorry for all the blurry pics, camera sucks pretty bad. let me know what you think so far!! thanks!![]()

Great build!!! Looks awesome.
I had to redo my brakes on my chrome one as well. I just bought 3 front break kits and 3 feet of white tubing and used that. Not correct but it works great and looks good too.
RAD IS STILL NOT AVAILABLE ON AN OFFICIAL DVD!!!! Don't be fooled..

Awesome. Make sure you put that reflector back on...for authenticity...
You know, Roy Munson has two chances to win this tournament now...slim and none...and slim may have just left town.

Nope but I did with a set of gt mags. Are you using 1.25 size tires? If so go with a wider tire and they should be fine.

Re: My first old school build- 1987 Mongoose decade-whatcha think?
does the road bike end pull thru the rotor or is it perfect? the walmart ones pull right thru. i was going to run regular cables, but they look kind of ugly.

Re: My first old school build- 1987 Mongoose decade-whatcha think?
Took me a bit but the Porkchop ones fit. The shaft on the botton is a littler shorter but the top wide head is the same size. I ended up keeping the original inner cable as there was nothing wrong with them just needed a bit of lube plus new white housing. I will keep them as spares.

Re: My first old school build- 1987 Mongoose decade-whatcha think?
i ended up just getting 3 odyssey slic cables with white housings and used those. it came out alright, but that thing is a royal pain to get adjusted! i have no spring tension on the brakes it seems, they dont pull back enough, it feels like mush when i pull the lever, all my cables are not hung up on anything or kinked. maybe its just a spintech characteristic i guess?
