Re: Stems - DK
Not exactly sure what model this is (I know it's the newer style, but I meant mini, pro, etc). The pics are a little misleading, I do have the zero lined up, it looks off due to the angle. I wanted to show the dims though.

Re: Stems - DK
Green Griffin 420 had this thread in the catchall and I thought it would be nice to have here. ![]()
The first thing I want to say is, just because you have a square corner dk stem, it's not necessarily a 1st gen.
This is has become a pet peeve of mine recently. I've been collecting them and researching them for a few years now and I think I have a pretty good grasp of the square corner stem. I'm not here to to debate sizes and models they came in Mini, Special Pro, Pro, Pro XL and XXL. this thread is strickly about the Pro and up steel quill stems. Mini and Special Pro have aluminum quills in most cases. I will be borrowing pics from members and the reference section.
so here we go
1st generations dk stems, DO NOT have a dk engraving on the top cap. The Quill has a very coarse knurl that goes about 3/4 up the shaft from the wedge. I'm not sure if it has a key way, but I think it does. I'm unable to verify 100%, but I have read in threads in the past, that the 1st gens also had a steel wedge, not aluminum.
Here's a pic of MUNCH's xxl.
2nd generation dk stems, are engraved. They still have a very coarse knurl that goes about 3/4 up the shaft from the wedge. They have a key way on the bar side of the base. And 2nd gens introduced the world to the aluminum wedge.
Heres some pics of Jon's (OLDSKOOLPK).
This is OLDSKOOLPK's

3rd generation dk stems are engraved, They now have a finer knurl that goes about 3/4 up the shaft from the wedge. They have a key way on the bar side of the quill, and a aluminum wedge.
Here's some pics of 84master's.

4th generation dk stems are engraved, they still have the fine knurl that goes about 3/4 up the shaft from the wedge. They have an aluminum wedge , but they drop the key way.
Here's some pics of lperezco74's.

5th generation dk stems are engraved, but the fine knurl only goes about 1/4 up the shaft from the wedge. They have an aluminum wedge , but no key way. I believe this one is a transition to the sq corner base with a round cap. I've seen several sq/round combos with the same knurl.
Here's some pics of Haro-83's

Now what I don't know about the stems is a factual time line. but here's my best guess.
1st gens 1979
2nd gens 1980-82
3rd gens 1983-85
4th gens 1986-88
5th gens 1988-89
I think they were all rounded by 1990.
If you've got pics to share or can add anything I missed please feel free.
NEEDS!!!!!!!!!
Nothing right now.
