NOS source

Can anyone here shed some light on the source of all the NOS stuff that shows up here? I mean does it come from LBS's or warehouses or manufactures? Should I just walk into my LBS and ask to buy all the stuff they haven't sold 20-30 years ago. I'm just trying to find out how to go about getting a start to a collection to rival some of the sick collections of the members here. (I don't want your actual source, just some advice) thanks. -(I'm new, I know, pls don't hate)

Re: NOS source

I am kind of shocked you don't know about this. There is a huge BMX NOS repository near cheyenne mountain. I try to make it there at least twice a year. I rent a U-Haul truck and bring a couple of friends to help me load. We grab stuff until our backs can't take it anymore.

If it were that easy, everybody would have nothing but NOS parts. This hobby is about luck and money.

Re: NOS source

Well I have come across more then my fair share of NOS parts. But it all comes at a price. I have hundreds of hours in researching and locating old shops etc. Then once you find them do you think you can just walk in and say sell me all your NOS BMX stuff NOT!!!!! You have to spend time getting to know the shop owner earning their trust. Some will never let you in.  Some will. But to be honest I have yet to walk into a bike shop that has been around since the early 80's and not find something to bring home. Most of the shop owners have forgotten they still have stuff packed away. You need to jog their memory.   Good luck and happy hunting. Once you get your first Score it makes it all worth while.

Re: NOS source

you are WAY too late bro! wink

the only way you will find "nos" gear now is to buy it from the guys who picked it all from shops ten years ago.

sure, you may stumble across an odd bit here and there but, by and large, the shops are dryer than an 80 year old woman.

Re: NOS source

Like the guys have said, it's out there. You need to be smooth in your approach, you can't just walk up to a shop and ask for all their old stuff for sale. There are a good number of shop owners like said have forgotten about old packed away stuff.

Just start asking about 80's specific parts that can lead to the stash. Something like " I got my old bike from my parents, and want to tune it up for my__________ (son. daughter, nephew, etc.)" I've looked around your displays, and can't seem to locate a threaded headset I guess becuase the new bikes don't use them anymore HUH"?  " I also think my old plastic seat is cracked, and needs to be replaced". Dou you have anything like that around where I didn't see them?

Re: NOS source

Its funny ....I had a member pm the same question 2 weeks ago....after I posted a for sale post with a few factory bundles of nos tires.  And I told him that it involves a pocket of money a 800 mile drive and most importantly....LUCK.   his next question was where do I live?  I realize that its gotta be hard seeing people have all these NOS parts.  But don't think for a second they just fell in there lap........if you want it bad enough you put the time in and be willing to go the extra mile to make it happen..........gotta go balls out
