parting out: is it worth the effort?

Hey everybody. I usually like to keep bikes complete but I have one I'm ready to sell and am thinking about parting it out. In your opinion, is worth the extra time and effort to tear it down and list everything separately? I'd be using Ebay to sell the parts.
Thanks

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

For me...  NO.

I'm not a flipper, I'm not in it for the money (Not saying that all that do, are flippers, or in it for the money).  So, a couple hundred, or more loss from parting saves me a lot of time packing stuff up, and shipping.  I know it's not that hard, but for me, it's just inconvenient.

I think it's been proven over, and over again that parting can be quite profitable.  Especially on ebay.  of course, there are the fees, but I think you make that up, and then some by parting there.

sell_all_his_stuff has been parting out NOS bikes quite a bit lately.  They parted a NOS 86 Sport, which would probably max go for 2000-3000 complete, in box.  I think they doubled that by parting it out.  Of course, that's a NOS desireable bike, that nobody else has.

I many times will put a complete up, if there is enough interest in the part, I'll part it.  But I part it here.  Again, I know I could make more on ebay, but I'd rather support the community, and the good people here with reasonable prices.  But, I don't want to part, if only a few parts are wanted.  I just don't want to be left with a skeleton of a bike laying around.

I'm actually considering parting out one of my Masters soon, just because I have enough stock looking Masters...  I just like all the colors.  smile

My 2 pennies.  smile

Most of my stuff will be for sale soon!

Part it out for max profit unless it is a stunning survivor, and don't use ebay as the fees are crazy.

You'll almost always make more, but I can't imagine dealing with eBay to do it.

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

thanks for all your replies everybody. i just sold the bike complete. It was on craigslist for only a few hours. i actually got more than i was asking. i was gonna go the ebay route cause i wasn't sure about what to price the parts at. i figured ebay bidders would set the prices

and for those of you wondering, it was a 1998 GT Show

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

Taking a bike apart maybe takes 1/2 an hour so for me that is not much effort but listing all those parts on ebay would a huge pain in the arse.

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

You would have got approximately 5-600.00 parting that out here (minus shipping fees and your time).
What did you sell it for on C/L and how did you get more than what you were asking?

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

i thought parting it would get around $500, i was asking $350, and sold it for $420. The guy called and offered me more. iI told him i had someone coming to see it for $350 (which i did). It needed cables, had some rust on the bars and fork dropouts, and the rear hub was a bit loose and a little noisy.

Re: parting out: is it worth the effort?

For some that put together an expensive bike it is the only way to get back their initial investment as many will not pony up the entire amount to buy a complete that can touch 10K or even 6k for that matter.  When people find completes and want to fund their hobby they will part the bike out 100% of the time for maximum return.

There are a few exceptions to this rule where the complete is worth more than the sum of it's parts-a very rare occasion though.

Sometimes its the only way to get a bike sold. I've listed completes that were priced right but just didn't sell. Once I parted.........sold like hotcakes.
