Re: Pedals - Suntour
mine i restored and what it takes to do it
now i'm not saying this is going to be the case with every set of these but probably a majority.
1. assume some of the cage bolts will be stripped
a. you need to cut the face of the allen bolt to except a flathead screwdriver. or i've heard of using easy outs
b. take them appart including rubber seals
c. heat em with a torch or something to get the aluminum bodies to expand around the bolts
d. try slowly to twist them out ( the red locktite they were originally put in with has turned to powder from the heat, clogging the threads but stuck is stuck you gotta do somethin)
e. assuming you get that done now chase the threads to get all the old locktite out. if you don't the correct size of new cage screw isn't going to fit the way it should. you will think you have the a screw with a thread thats too fine.
f. hope that none of the spots where the screws go are or got stripped (can't help ya there)
g. be carefull trying to bend teeth on the cages they snap easy!
i'll take micrometer measurments of the screws and check the thread paople seem to have a heck of a time finding these things.
i think thats it. it is really a pain and no guaretnees that your going to end up with a good set of ridable pedals. the tiny bolt design was a really bad idea
but they are a really nice pedals if all works out for ya. good luck!

Re: Pedals - Suntour
Many people don`t know about the 2 versions of XC-II pedals. The first early braceless version was for BMX. The later braced version is actually for mountain bikes. Thats what the extra bracing and offset cleats are all about. They are meant to be used with toe-straps. They even sold toe-straps with curved washers specifically for XC-II pedals.
★Still searching for my missing bikes from BITD. 1979 Blue Max serial: CI9 221346 and 1977 Webco serial: W42667. Both were sold used at Spoke and Sport Bicycles in Spokane, WA around 1984. Reward if found!!★

You are correct Sir........braced came 1st and for BMX and MTB. Other differences are the braced had stamped chrome cage screws. Some braceless (post 83) had "S" stamped/rounded face in the begining then later models plain flat faced cage screws. 1st year braced also came with XC-1 cages with sharp teeth. Then in 1983/1984 they switched to the XCII stamped cages for both types.
Suntour XC-1 Pedals 1982
Japan
These first generation Suntour BMX/MTB pedals had extremely sharp teeth, a feature that was eliminated in later models.
Suntour XC - II 1983
Japan
These Suntour "beartrap" style pedals were prized by both BMX riders and early mountain bike riders.

Re: Pedals - Suntour
I may have my timeline wrong about which came first but the braced ones are for mountain bikes. There is no other reason for a brace to be there except to support the toe-strap.

Re: Pedals - Suntour
the reason they changed the bodies was so that they did not have to make a "right" and a "left" body. the earlier version had three teeth on one side of the spindle and one tooth on the other side. the later (and less desirable) version had two teeth on each side on the spindle and no brace.
by going to a two tooth per side body suntour could use the same body for either side.

Re: Pedals - Suntour

XC Compe 79/80 and MP 1000 81/82 have similar styling as KKT Lightning but the cages have screws that allow removal/replacement
XC-I was the original beartrap with sharp teeth, didn't last more then a year as too much damage was inflicted .... ouch ! 81
XC-II later modified (2 variations - 3-1 braced and the 2-2s clipped - also the tiny bolts that held the cages went from the earliest of the entire SUNTOUR word on them to just the letter S and finally plain) 81/82-90ish
