Original early 86 Haro Master - Gyro, Group 1 stem

If you look at my old post at http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.p … 83&p=1 - you'll see I have a rusty 86 Master I was looking to restore - I actually just sent it to Chip and it's on it's way back.  That's my original Haro I had as a kid and it was an early `86 model - exactly identical to the one I just picked up last week.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-27-05_868.jpg

This one is also has a Nov of 85 serial number just like my original, but a little bit lower of a number.

The one I just picked up has a sugino bb
Later model has Suntour bb

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-13-22_256.jpg

Next - the Group1 stem and Odyssey Gyro.  I'm almost positive that my original bike I had came with a Gyro, but was switched out for some reason or another.  The new bike I just picked up has a Gyro and the one thing I noticed about my two Group 1 stems is they have ANLUN stamped with backwards N's.  I think these stems indicated they were for bikes with Gyros.  All of the other Group1 stems I see for sale don't have the backwards N.  Does anyone know if that's the case - or did any of these bikes come originally with gyros?

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-27-53_194.jpg

Next up is the levers.  My old bike came with these for front and rear brakes:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-27-28_229.jpg

This new bike has the lever above for a front brake and this for a rear brake:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-27-21_190.jpg

Forks:
These are the forks off of my original bike - the one with the later serial number:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-04-06_23-20-58_169.jpg

These are the forks on the bike I just picked up - notice how high the holes are - and they came with flip down `86 standers:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/2012-05-03_18-28-12_875.jpg

And here are regular `86 forks:
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h113/ahaughn/002_copy554_blowup.jpg

Can anyone shed any light on what I have or know anything else about this bike?

Also - would you have Chip re-do it or leave it as it is?  Whoever had it before me looks to have sprayed it with white spray paint - some of the decals have over spray and the crank arms have a little bit that I'm in the process of removing.

FYI - My old rusty bike was painted all green because the chrome was in too bad of shape to be re-plated.

I believe '86 Masters came with Dia Compe Tech 5 brake levers either 183 or 283.(not sure which number but both are pretty much the same)  Those levers on the bike you got look like 128 Tech 6 levers.

Early '86 complete Haro's didn't come with a GYRO. The first complete bikes to come with Gyros were mid 86 GT's

Re: Original early 86 Haro Master - Gyro, Group 1 stem

Don't worry guys - gonna keep it all original.  I'm not changing anything on it except...

The gyro is coming off because I don't really do tricks, blue cables are hard to find, and it's not original to the bike.

I have a NOS chrome Hatta MX-10 in the box, but I just ordered a Tioga Bear trap 2 for $20 to throw on there.

The Hatta would make it all OG, but they're kind of hard to come by and I plan on riding this thing!!  I'll save the Hatta for now - or is it worthy?  Chip from C4 told me they tend to come loose and a bear trap is better if I plan on riding it.

Is there any place special to go and get blue cables?

The overspray came off real easy with steel wool - she's lookin' good so far!

I just picked these up from radmeon.  They're in the perfect condition! http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b315/radmeon/Parts%20-%204-12/DSC04524.jpg

I agree. A beartrap would be a way better idea for riding. Or a GT epoch. Sacriledge on a Haro!!  lol

Re: Original early 86 Haro Master - Gyro, Group 1 stem

The Hatta is a good headset. But if you want to save it that Tioga Bear Trap 2 it the best bang for your buck. It is a great headset.  In the body shop we use clay bar to take off over spray.  We only use steel wool on the glass. Hopefully it didn't scratch to bad. lol I know frame has some chips already but a great survivor.

I took off the Gyro - On the headset on there now the top nut says 'motocross Japan Tange' - is it anything special?

I just need some break cables - anybody know where to get them?  The nippon on the back has the quick adjust so the rear brake cable will need a threaded piece - are those hard to come by?

What's the reason for a gyro not working with a Hatta headset? Pretty sure that's the combination on my 86 Master.

Do you have a pic of it?  It may be because of how large the top Hatta bearing nut is.

The headset on mine is a Tange MX-2 which isn't original to the bike - so I'm pretty sure the Gyro and cables aren't either.

Looks like the cables won't be a problem - I think I found everything I need.

My Frame and forks are idential to yours, a white Nov '85  dated 1986 Master, with the high fork stander mounts I added the gyro to my bike.

Hard to see here, but I can take a close up of the Gyro/Hatta headset setup, but I've no problem with clearance. I did on the GT with the Epoch hedset but I managed to find the Gyro friendy version of the Epoch headset on that build.

I had heard the same, it's a gen 1 Odyssey Gyro and what I believe is an MX-10 headset. I'll take a few better shots of it this evening. It's tight but I guess it's 1-2mm clearance around the gyro bearing race and the upper cup.

In a old post you talk about headsets.  You say an '85 Haro Master has a Hatta MX-10 headset.  How about the '86 Haro Master?  Same headset?   And what is the difference between the Hatta MX-II and the MX-10.  Which is better.  Can the Mx-10 be used with a gyro?    thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have done a bunch of research on this as I wanted to make sure that was the proper headset. MX10's are really expensive and I didnt want to waste money if that wasnt the correct headset. (I figured I could better spend the money elsewhere. smile ) If you look at the pics in the 85 Haro catalogs it is definitely a Hatta MX10. You can tell by the distinctive rounded upper locknut/cup. On a MX10 the upper cup cover is almost like a rounded reverse cup and hangs down and covers the actual cup. Check this pic here...

http://bmxmuseum.com/forsale/49371

Here is another pic,

http://www.retrospectbmx.com/images/hatta%201a.JPG

On a MXII the upper cover/locknut is a flat plate more like a typical headset

http://martin-bike.com/BikeBuilder/Head … 06ae_1.jpg

An MX10 can not be used with a a gyro but a believe a MXII can. Either one is a great quality headset. If you plan on running a Gyro I would save some bucks and do the MXII. Even though it wont be 100% correct for what the bike came with from the factory no one is going to see it. (as the gyro is in the way) I am building my 85 to be exactly as they came from the factory so I wont be running a gyro.

Don't know if the pics came through.  If they didn't I'll try again.

Re: Original early 86 Haro Master - Gyro, Group 1 stem

I'll try and take a better shot today, but it's definitely an MX-10 as the upper cup comes down over the bearings. Everyone just said it wouldn't work, I guess due to the way the Epoch system doesn't work. But no one actually tried it that I spoke to.
But the upper part of the MX-10 isn't so much wider, if at all than the lower bearing cup, see the second pic of the MX-10.
