Chroming Superlace Hubs

I recently talked with a chromer who's worked with members here and gets lots of praise. I'm needing to get a number of parts chromed, two of which are my 1st Gen GT Superlace Hubs with the original white paint/powder still in tact.

The chromer believes that once the hubs are stripped down to bare metal (aluminum?) and polished, they will probably only take the chrome part of the process with a specific application. This rules out the 1st and (I believe) second coat of nickel and whatever else they dip the parts in before the chrome is actually applied. His theory is that they can't take all three processes due to the the finished thickness and maintaining the lines and proper spoke hole size.

I'm worried about this because I've seen a few chromed hubs chipping / peeling at the spoke holes and I don't want it to happen to me.

I want to know and be able to advise the chromer as to what the process should be to obtain as good or better quality than the Chrome Superlace had new from the GT factory.

Does anyone know anything about properly chroming hubs?

It's fun to see the same clapped out 20$ part posted at the same price, for the 30th time. At what point will you just give it to someone who might use it?

Re: Chroming Superlace Hubs

Alright. Here is the thing. from what I have been told, "show chrome" is chromium over copper. This is how my superlaces were when I had them stripped.

Chromium over nickel is just regular chrome. Perhaps using copper would allow for a thinner base coat?

They are aluminum..

I thought I had something else to say but it escapes me...

Re: Chroming Superlace Hubs

Hey.
A pic of my bike!

Those hubs in that pic are factory chrome. btw.

I have seen some hubs chromed before that looked nice, and also some that look like bubble gum.
The GT hubs have tons of small details compared to a regular suzue style hub. so I can see the chromer's concern.
Maybe just have the hubs polished up so they're nice and shiny aluminum.  Just an option..... I'd hate to see you ruin a decent set of superlace hubs. they're a little pricey to replace.

smile

Good luck whatever you decide.

So then chromium over some chemical to make it stick would be a peeling flaky mess ten minutes after I lace the wheels... this was my concern. hmm

And, you had Chrome Superlaces stripped and they were in fact chromium over copper before stripping? If yes, that's what I have to have.

I thought about just polishing them but had never seen it done. I am a bit concerned as to how they'll look after being stripped.

I personally would try to trade them to someone with already stripped hubs, or someone with chrome hubs if possible.
I used to have a set of stripped aluminum superlace hubs, and traded them to Dyno Mike for a set of survivor white ones - because he had planned to powder them black for a specific build.  I think we were both happy about that deal.  Saved some OG stuff - and provided a part for a custom build.

btw, there's nothing wrong with a nicely (and carefully/respectfully ) hand-polished aluminum hub.

for sure. I know this because they were flaking, for one.. also.. when they were stripped he had to use nitric acid to remove the copper, which also wrecked the races that were in them. I didn't bother removing them because it's difficult and I didn't want to chance wrecking them and because I was doimg white anyway.. not re chrome.

That's a good call. I've actually got a set of white Superlace Hubs and a black set. I may start pursuing a trade.

NICE. I wonder how hard it would be to get a set of Superlace Hubs to look like that??? yikes

BTW, my white Superlaces in question need restoring without a doubt. They've weathered over the years from neglect. So, it's really just a matter of how I'm going to go about it. I'd like it if they looked good as survivors but they won't IMO.

Polishing is a good option, I'll try to remember to post up a redline hub I polished just the other day.  More to follow...

I'm no restoration pro, but If they're raw aluminum - like kbillan is offering - It wouldn't be hard to get them shiney like that at all.
Just get some Mothers Alum Polish and a rag - or a soft buffing wheel and go to town.

Polishing is a nightmare lol

I polished my power series crank arms only to rescuff.. all that work... then to scuff em up.. was tough...roll

IF you do decide to polish, be sure you clear them once polished. Aluminum will only stay polished so long.. they oxidize pretty quick.. never dull will bring it back.. but still- more work.

If I dont find a race soon- and I lose interest, I may be selling a set of white superlace (missing front races) and a really nice set of UKAI with fresh white powder.

What are these races you speak of? Are they sealed bearing or loose ball?
