For me it's a clean classic look synonymous with the late 70's to 80's BMX. I need to get a Ripper, JMC, Champ Pro, and maybe a goose or two.
The reason bike companies went away from the looptail design in the late 80's was to cut costs associated with the waste the loopy frames can generate. When you have to bend the parts there is a very small margin for error. It's much easier to get three or four parts to line up in a welding fixture.
this.....they cant afford that craftmanship anymore

Looptails I would think would be stronger and more durable since there are less welds to fail.I could be totally wrong though.

for me it looks great, and different. I love how the rear is all one piece of bent tubing instead of four triangle pieces weleded together. Plus it's a classic look from a great time in BMX history.. They are set apart from a lot of other bikes. Oh and mongoose had them for a long time and I love goose from the movie RAD from BITD, so that's another reason.
That's why I love them..

I love looptail frames. In my opinion it makes the rear look cleaner and the dropouts neater. Most of my builds are looptails.

My first BMX race bike was an 82' PK Ripper, didn't care for the 85' "new ripper" when it came out, missed the Loop. Most all of my bike since have been loop tails.
84Mach1, your blue PK looks just my 82', miss that bike.

Re: What Is It About Looptails?
Ok, ill chime in since nobody is even close to the answer. Back in Webco motorcycles was propostioned to use their name on a line of bmx bikes, since their main competitors had small entry level sucesses with their motocross bicycles. The design was to go away from the motocross/muscle bike design and favor the now common "double diamond", if you will, bmx shape. One of the key features to webco's design was a looptail rear, this allowed the rear dropout to be slightly rotated, a few degrees, downward. This key feature was to market the rear tire would make better contact with the ground, thus a faster bike then the competitor was building. A looptail rear end is also cheaper to manufacturer than the seatstay/chainstay design. Thus design is good when you use cho-mo tubing. Se racing has said in print," looptail designs are no good when building aluminium bikes, the material does not hold up". But they still give the customer what they want , it is a poplular early 70's design. After webco decided not to continue building bikes, because it did not bring in the profits they needed, the looptail craze hit. Earlier/vintage bikes have used a looptail design before on head tubes, bottom brackets, rear dropouts, and even looptail tubular forks! But it was only intended as a cost cutting manufacturing design to reduce fabricating steps......thats what looptails are all about.
If I owe you feedback please pm me.

I would say that we have all posted the correct answer, for us.
I think your post is interesting though, but I'm not sure how it applies to making a looptail "special" to so many people. ![]()

did you wish you got the white???? I know that you can still get the grey for a good price, but I can't seem to do it... I want a retro pk and that's about the only one I can find NEW at a good price..
Do you have more pics of it? I like to see real pics not studio ones on the net.

Re: What Is It About Looptails?
bones, no good pics. here's pretty much all i got. i put solid red street tires on but regret it now, porkchopped the pedals, porkchopped the seat, got a NOS GT piston stem and since this pic put on an NOS suntour chainring. the parts that came on it were kinda cheap IMO and were more pink than red. the pedals were purple. this is the same with the white ones. you could get the grey one cheap and have it powdered white or any color and still have a decent bike at a decent price.
