what about when the kid races older kids? last night my son (6i) raced 1-7yr old and 3-9yr olds, the class was called "9i" . he got second in all the races including the main (they only had 2 motos and a main) he still gets points for second even though he was racing older kids right?
I believe in that instance your son still receives 2nd place, intermediate points. I am always lumped together with the 15x riders at my track, so even though I am a 19-27 novice rider I am earning expert points for all of my last place finishes. But regardless of age grouping, you will always earn the points of the highest skilled rider in the moto (i.e. novice and intermediate riders will get expert points if there is an expert racer in their moto)

yeah sort of
is that always the way they score?
No, they don't always score it that way. A track director has the option of declaring a total points race if it better suits the racing environment. If there are only 3 riders, they will typically run total points because it ensures the 3 riders race all-out for all of the motos. In total points there is no traditional main event; instead, each moto is like a main event and the total score after the motos determines placing.
well the race we were talking about DID have 3motos and a specific main so i dont know if it was a total points race or not but i will pay more attention from now on ![]()

Landry just now switched and the Ssquared jr is only 18", which is small for a jr. He is also much taller than your son. He is 49-50" right now at 7.5 yrs old. We came off a Redline mini which is 17.5". My opinion would be stay mini. Add a longer stem when needed. Go to jr 4" bars now though. The taller bars will aid in gates, manualing and jumping. At 44" he should be around the 140mm cranks with a 39x15 on 1" tires.
For future reference, Ssquared will be going to a larger top tube on future jr frames. I spoke with them since they advertised at 18.25 but measured 17 7/8ths. 18.25 was based on virtual rider area. The jump from mini to jr was not sufficient in my opinion.
So would you have rather had the longer top tube for your son? My son is about the same height and I need to buy him a frame, so I was considering getting a junior, but I dont want it to be to big, but I also dont want him to outgrow it in 6 mos either. He is also on a Redline min, and I have been looking at the Supercross jr, which is an 18.5" TT. I also am considering the Vendetta Mini XL which has a 18" TT.
Thanks!

Re: DAD'S PIT BOX
18.25 would have been ideal. I can tell you that even thought the mini top tube on the Redline and the Ssquared were both 17.5" the Redline frame was longer overall. The Squared mini would have never worked for Landry even though I felt the Redline mini was still good at the time of the team change. Landry is 51". I have not seen him on any other Junior other than the Squared.

Re: DAD'S PIT BOX
Cool. Thanks. I am gonna seek out someone at the track with one and see if they will let me size him on it.
BTW, that is a sweet looking bike! It is making me want to have his fork painted.
Thanks again.

Re: DAD'S PIT BOX
Fork is actually wrapped by my local sign guy. Landry has had both sets of his forks wrapped in lightning, just a nick name catchy kinda thing

based on this he's on a 51.2? with 1 1/8 tires. I am running 155mm cranks right now. On the track it looks like it fits well, just curious because many other kids are already a frame size up with taller stand over height. I would prefer he stay on the redline for the remainder of the year if he doesn't have another super growth spurt.my son is 6, almost 7 yrs old. he is the same heigh as your kid. he just moved up to a JR (Hyper) with JR bars. 155mm cranks, 55 roll out, 33/12 is the ratio. i know it is a little different than some other people are running but he is smoking the competition so i think it is working well
Where do u even get a 33 tooth in a bcd 110 5 bolt? I didn't think anyone made them that small? I needed one for Landry's race mtb but had to settle on a 34t being the smallest I could find
tangent makes them, just picked one up for one of the little girls on the team

Re: DAD'S PIT BOX
my 2 older kids do when its super dusty or rainy. they use the fox focus youth goggles. clear lenses, although i may look into slightly tinted for really bright days and see how they like em. the focus lenses are interchangeable with scott lenses apparently.
my 3 year old had her first race on her race bike earlier this week. she started last season on a push bike, then a lil 12" kmart special. got her a haro micro mini, changed a few things, and she's off! she still does half track, but i can see her graduating to full track by mid season. she came away with 2 firsts and a 2nd on opening day. my 7x got a 2nd, and my 9G got a 1st. wifey and i both got 3rd in our cruiser classes...great start to the year so far!
