Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

So for no reason other than I have nothing else to do, I started thinking about this topic.  I've never raced an indoor track.  I'm sure many of you have.

What are the differences, other than the obvious indoor/outdoor?
I assume the indoor track is placed on concrete. How many inches of dirt do thay have to put on top of that?
Any other pros and cons to each?

Re: Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

we had an indoor track for the winter season, was super fun...  it seems as if the track condition where better controlled...  i didn't really find any big difference other then the dust when outside...  some of are big races where indoors...   some dirt and some concrete with wood jumps...    just great to be able to race all year long, when you live in Canada...

Re: Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

I've raced at 3 different indoor tracks this year.

1. Thrifty acres:http://taibmx.com
Being built inside of an old Meijers Grocery store, It's got tons of room, great lighting and full bathrooms.
The track is all dirt and is not noticeably different than any outdoor track.  Plus indoor, spacious bathrooms.
As for how much dirt, i'd have to defer to them for that answer.
Enough room for an additional pump/DJ track with plenty to spare.

2. Dayton Indoor BMX: http://bmxdayton.com/
Built in an old factory, Space is limited so track is short and tight.
very dark and it gets pretty cold in the winter. no indoor plumbing.

3. 4130 BMX Park:  http://www.4130bmxpark.com/
Built inside an old steel factory.  High ceilings allow for huge starting hill and big descent in first straight.
Good lighting although no heat and it gets a bit dusty.  Also no plumbing.
Great track layout.  Intense but short track (~1000 ft)

Re: Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

Bitd, indoor tracks were always the smoothest, partly because most were built a few days before a national weekend. But today with soil tack on the out door tracks, theres really no difference. Other then the size of the venue.

On the look out for Bonzai frames, Cardboard Lords Emanicaptor/Liberator frames, Hawk frames, and anything BRAND X!!!

Re: Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

Indoor tracks are, generally speaking, shorter in total length.

Re: Indoor Tracks vs. Outdoor Tracks

Indoor tracks are limited by the amount of space you have to build in. I have raced in the covention center in Tucson and that is a very short and tight track.  Turns are 1/2 the size of regular turns in length, so you really have to cut tight to get around them.  Plus, you have to drop your gearing down a few sizes to run a shorter, tighter track.  They are more fun to race on though!!   big_smile

Biggest difference are the elements - wind vs no wind smile
