1985 GT Pro Performer
1985 GT Pro Performer
Recreation of my BITD bike.
I wanted to recreate my BITD bike and although close to the original I did do a couple of minor upgrades that I would to have loved back then. The first being the GT Superlace coaster and front GT Superlace hub set and the Redline 401s.
A complete restoration project that's tough to squeeze into 4 photos, but I kept a restoration blog here.
* 1985 (US made) GT Pro Performer frame and forks
* GT Epoch headset (full gyro friendly version)
* GT SR Mallet Stem
* GT Performer Bar
* A'me Tri (bubble font)
* Dia Compe Tech 7 levers
* Dia Compe Nippon calipers
* Odyssey Gyro (gen 1)
* NOS DC front cable
* NOS Odyssey Gyro 1 cables
* Shimano DX pedals
* Redline 401 180mm single pinch full wrap
* NOS GT-BMX Viscount seat
* NOS GT layback
* NOS GT Shinko green tyres
* Araya Aero 20x1.75
* NOS GT Superlace Coaster Brake
* GT Superlace front hub
* GT Seat clamp
* GT Power disc
* Sugino chainring 43T
* NOS ACS chain
* GT frame standers
* GT fork standers

Green Shinkos come up from time to time NOS, I got lucky with these and also picked up an orphan spare as well. So I'll build up a matching non-coaster Superlace rear too.

Re: 1985 GT Pro Performer
I couldn't agree more ZJ, the seat clamp was probably the biggest turn around in the whole build.
Weird how one of the smallest parts, that is usually of minor significance, almost took the most time to resto, and nearly the centre piece too..

Re: 1985 GT Pro Performer
share the process of getting that seat clamp so shiny and new? I will be in the same boat in a few months and would love to have mine look like this.

Re: 1985 GT Pro Performer
The seat clamp was a labour of love so to speak.
I started with removing all the remains of the purple paint off, then just started to sand the clamp down to remove all the nicks and marks on it.
Not many were that deep thankfully. I did this by hand many to make sure I preserved the GT wing stamps as best I could which were nice and deep.
After that it was just to used finer and finer sand paper, then to polish it by hand with Autosol.
I originally planned on keeping it completely polished with the GT stamp in black, so there was an interim stage when it was like this:
But it didn't suit the build, so I had the clamp powder coated white and then, slowly remove the powder coat with very fine sand paper, followed by another polish with Autosol. Again all done by hand...

They'll be on it very soon!
Got a set of custom Action Zones decals made up for it in the GT colours, yellow with a blue outline in the same way the GT decal on the down tube it.
Should look different at least...
