Re: 80's riders riding today

Here's me doing a few oldschool bunny hops and riding backwards, I got run over on my original '81 supergoose back in '83 and never got into the mid '80s freestyle stuff.
But........ me and my family ride all that we or I can now.

Re: 80's riders riding today

well I stopped racing in '86. I lived in the Tidewater area in Va. then I moved to Richmond in '84 and there were less tracks around here. I still kept racing for another 2 years but had to travel a little more to get to the tracks. It wasn't untill I got a job in '86 and that made it much harder to take time off to race BMX. I gave it up and still rode but soon later my JMC Black Shadow was stolen from in front of my parent's house. I was riding dirtbikes at the time and went in that direction. Later I ended up racing them and fourwheelers and stuck with that untill recent. Funny the way this started again, I was sitting outside having a cold one and the neighbor came over to ride the track at the house. He asked his girlfriend to come over and we got to talking about growing up. She grew up in my old neigborhood in Tidewater and lives 3 houses down from me now. I decided to go back to my old "stopping grounds" and ride my BMX bike on the old streets and visit a place we used to ride called The Mudflats. I did it and had a ball doing tricks and jumping in the same place I did in '84. A few weeks ago I put together my new PK Ripper and went to a BMX race and decided to sign up and do it again 25 years later. I went to the track and did some practice laps and it felt real good, my first race is Sunday, Father's Day. Needless to say I am STOKED!!!!!! I will be doing it all over again and feel lucky I still can, I only weigh 170 and that's not much more than I did back in the day!!!

Go Scotty Go !

Sounds like you guys had some pretty neat spots growing up. All our spots are malls or houses so we need to come up with
organized jams here in MN.

Way to go !

Re: 80's riders riding today

ITS nice to know that the art of tricks, jumps ,freestlying, stunts ,is alive,a form of expressing oneself ,without being held back..We in Australia have somewhat replaced that with a neat formal wear and stiff upper lip...even tattoes are placed to match designer  shoes ...hmm

Re: 80's riders riding today

What a great thread! I used to ride a lot of flat land, street, vert and skate parks back in the mid to late 80's. How things have progressed.
I am also 38 years old and would love to get back onto an old ride and bust out some of that old gold magic. I wouldn't say I was the best at it back then but from my group of riding friends I could hold my own.
Today I am searching for an old skool freestyler and will endeavour to master all the tricks I couldn't back then and take on a pile of the new ones too.
A few of my buddies still skateboard and i reckon they'd be blown away if i joined them on a bike when they hit the local skate parks.
Being Australian, I am not sure there are many others my age into the old skool stuff but if anyone here is from the land down under and reside near Sydney I'd like to met up for a session.
Great work guys. Keep the dream alive!

Re: 80's riders riding today

I'm creeping up on 42.  I used to ride in the mid to late 80's.  Screwed my back (Surgery) up my senior year and didn't ride again for over 10 yrs. MTB mostly.  Last year I was at a friends new bike shop and decided to try a few old tricks and after 23 years off the bike I was amazed at what I could still do.  So I bought a new old bike and here I am.  I will probably never ride a ramp or park, but at least I can still ride.

Re: 80's riders riding today

Great thread! Glad to see there are still (foolish) people out there like me. And I dont mean foolish in a bad way. I'm almost 38; just restored my 89 RL Two-Five. i hadn't been on a BMX'r since about 92 when my Trick Star was stolen. It took ALL my riding passion outta me and i stopped; cold turkey. Now that I've restored my 89 RL two five ( that had been in my parents shed since about 91-92... I've Been doing pretty good with the easier flatland tricks and moderate jumping. Until today when i hit a monster driveway curb in the industrial complex I work in, got about 6' of air, nice and smooth, flattened out a little... then... BLAMMO, lost control and came down flat on my back. Knocked the wind right outta me. I got back up and rode for another 40 minutes; but only hitting smaller curbs, lol.

I LOVE being back into riding! It's addictive all over again. and i will gain all my confidence and skills back. or die trying!

Re: 80's riders riding today

Wow, great to hear us old schoolers still love to ride. Sept 24 is the Condo Classic, a 5 year running charity bmx weekend.

I know most of you are far away but here in Minnesota we have kindled the fire for bmx and freestyle.
Our next event is going to be some racing new and old school style, dirt jumping, bmx old school ramp jam with real wooden ramps
All this at Rum River BMX track.

Rum River is a huge park with the best track in the state and onsite free camping. So if you did make the trip you could throw up a tent and just kick it with all the bikers for the weekend.

I'm 32 and OS tricks is all I know. NS rolling tricks are just so tricky to learn!
I'd stick to scuffs, hops, and squeakers

Re: 80's riders riding today

Although this is an old thread, I just read and enjoyed every post.  What a great thread.  Not sure if the original member of this post is still following, but to answer your question---YES!  I live on a court and use my 87 Performer as my rider.  BITD I was 145 lbs....I am now 205 and the bike takes most of the abuse.  I've had to true up my rims a few times though.  Fortunately, I live on a court and my neighbor is a former track racer and freestyle guy and has about 20 bikes in his basement.  I never even knew it!!!  One day a few years ago I was restoring my first bike ever (when I was getting back into it) and he told me about it.  So, I kind of got him back into it as well.  I'm pretty rusty on most things and he is re-teaching me a lot of stuff.  I stick to all old school flatland.  I'll admit, I do think about getting injured (I'm 38) which holds me back.  If anyone lives in the Columbus (Powell) area and wants to ride...just give me a shout out.  We could have an old school riding session and take over my court!  LOL  The neighborhood kids love it.  The one major bike casualty was on my Mongoose FS1.  We had the bunny hop bar set at 18 inches (yeah, i know...nothing to brag about) and I made it over but when i came down the entire back wheel (skyway tuff 2) came loose and started wiggling around and rubbing against the chainstay.  Easy fix....but, lesson learned.  Make sure your bike is ready for FS.  Great thread.

lol Yeah, rockwalk is one of the basics that is still in my repertoire.  For the bunnyhops, we started by using a cardboard box and we crushed it a few times.  Then my neighbor dug out the bunnyhop stand from his basement and it was fun until we started to get too dangerous and i mangled that rear tuff.  lol

Great thread, I can't wait to link up with some of you in Long Beach and San Diego.  I'm moving to San Diego in December.  Here is some of my progress.  I want to land a stick B and get a couple times around on a pinky squeek.  My longer term goal would be to land a combo fire hydrant to decade.
