1976 Mongoose Motomag
1976 Mongoose Motomag
1976 Mongoose Motto Mag
1976 Mongoose MotoMag. This restore was fun. I used everything possible from the orignal tear down. The frame, box handle bars and seat post clamp were triple chrome by Don Jose Custom's. I replaced the bearings and cups with year to date hardware and used the orignal nuts and washers on the forks and cranks. I brought the ashtabula cranks and forks back to life, along with the 7 hours I put in on the Motto Mags, stripping, steel wool and polish. The stem was in great condition and only required a good polishing. I replaced the pedals, seat, seat post, tires and Winner Circle grips with NOS items. All in all the bike turned out great.

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
Thanks, this one was a bit more of a challenge than the others, I still need black Winner Circle grips and I found a set of NOS Ashtabula forks last night for the bike. The old ones have a slight bend, not really noticable, but I know it's there.

Can you share you technique on polishing the motomags? I have a pair and would like to get them shiny like yours, but afraid of ruining the finish.

Re: 1976 Mongoose Motomag
Jimgbmx, isn't around much anymore... After he sold this to me, I eventually sold it as well. I wasn't into the chrome look for this era Mongoose. Also, it was a "shorty" which I cannot ride, as they are way too small for me.
The quickest way to clean up Motomag 11's (that I've found) is to use a very gentle media blast on them. Soda works very well as a media for this.
Sometimes (depending on their condition) just a good pressure wash can bring Motomags back to life quite nicely. Polishing can always be done by hand using Mothers or something similar, but it takes a good couple hours to do a pair. Cleaning up Motomag 1's is a different process.
A "Squonk" is like a Mongoose only much harder to find...
