1987 Brackens
1987 Brackens
Company started by Tommy Brackens, nicknamed the "Human Dragster" and a BMX legend.
Brackens BMX Frames came in several sizes, mini, 20" 20" pro, and 24".
They had distinctive gussetts on the chain stays where they meet the bottom bracket, to reduce Flex. I recently got an email from Kevin:
Gary, Yeah I recall that pic.It was in BMXAction. That pic got me my Vision Street Wear Hot Shotz Jacket since I was sponsored by them at the time. And yes I did ride with my seat that high but only while cuising around the streets. I would lower it for the races. The hubs were MXR hubs. They were hand machined by an Orange local racers father who was a machinest. There weren't many sets made. The ones in the pic were some of the first ones made.Sorry to say I no longer have them but I do have a set of their low flanged hubs thet came out later. Also, that is a Brackens in the pic.Tommy never made that color bike but got plenty of requests for it after this showed up in the magazine.I had the frame, forks, handlebars, seat post and the inside of my Araya 7X rims powder coated with a transparent blue over the chrome. It was a very shrp bike.Wish I still had it.

A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill!"

I remember the picture from BMXA, too. Tommy was one of my heros, back then. Unfortunately, i never saw one of these bikes live. Looks so hot from the pictures.

Re: 1987 Brackens
I still have that issue of BMXA. It has that cool interview with Todd Corbitt, a test of the '89 Robinson, the ABA Grands, a King Of Dirt...chock full of BMX goodness just like EVERY issue of BMXA.

That was the sickest blue I ever saw, I always wanted to do a bike in that blue once I had seen the article.

Re: 1987 Brackens
I grew up in South Austin and Kevin lived like 1 neighborhood over - I remember when he showed up at the local drainage ditch (on Westgate near Stassney if Kevin sees this) on a full pink Pro Performer - he was sponspored GT at the time and this was before pink or lavender were released to the public - man I STILL covet that bike - pink frame, bars, fork and post with white tuff 2's and white GT tires, otherwise pretty much all white GT components. It was like nothing we had ever seen... Pink? But, seeing as Kevin was riding it, it became legend. As for D.R.I. - yeah Felix, the drummer lived in that same neighborhood so that makes sense.

This was one of my favorite bikes from bitd. My 800pxl's color idea came from. ![]()

Re: 1987 Brackens
I have been talking with Kevin lately, and he said.."And yes I did run my seatpost that high bitd. Thanks for being a fan."
